The Results of Social and Environmental Impact Investments from the LIRA Fund (2020–2024 Cycle). The LIRA Fund brings together public and private resources — including BNDES/Amazon Fund and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation — to support indigenous, community-based, and extractivist organizations through institutional strengthening, leadership development, and sociobioeconomy growth in protected areas of the Amazon. This blended finance model multiplies the reach of every dollar invested in conservation. The results have demonstrated measurable impact on regional development, avoided deforestation, and bioeconomy advancement. LIRA also received a 9.5/10 score in a World Bank-led study evaluating donor collaboration in Amazon conservation projects. We hold the "NGOSource – Equivalency Determination Certified" status, which makes us equivalent to U.S. public charities for philanthropic purposes. Purpose backed by evidence. Built with the people who live in the forest. Join this network to scale impact. If your company, foundation, or organization is looking to support structured solutions for conservation, climate finance, and territorial development in the Amazon — let's talk. The LIRA Fund is the financial mechanism that invests in community-based organizations and cooperatives across the Brazilian Amazon, empowering them to lead their own socio-productive businesses and the governance of their territories. Since 2021, we have channeled US$ 2.5 million into 93 projects led by Indigenous, traditional extractivist, and Quilombola organizations, reaching more than 19,000 direct beneficiaries. Long-term environmental conservation depends on local organizations that are autonomous, connected, and prepared to lead their own paths. Watch the video in this post to learn more about the LIRA Fund. If your company, foundation, or organization is looking to support structured solutions for conservation, climate finance, and territorial development in the Amazon, let's talk. Research on the black lion tamarin began at the initiative of Claudio Valladares Padua in 1984. The business administrator left his profession in Rio de Janeiro to become a biologist and give a new purpose to his life by working for nature conservation. The opportunity to contribute to biodiversity came through research on the tamarin in the Pontal do Paranapanema. The research progressed with an environmental education component led by his wife, Suzana Padua, and habitat restoration through various other projects. New researchers who joined the couple out of interest in this line of research eventually led to the founding of IPÊ - Institute of Ecological Research years later, in 1992. Since then, the initial focus on studying the species' ecology has expanded, Padua explains. “I started wanting to save the black lion tamarin, but I realized that I wouldn’t be able to save it even if I studied everything possible about it. I discovered that it was necessary to involve people, a task initially led by Suzana. However, there was also the economic aspect that influences everything. We began to work on the conservation of the tamarin's habitat and regional economy, focusing on landscape planning and influencing public policies. Thus, we created the IPÊ model of conservation, which is based on science and community involvement".

25 years ago, IPÊ faced a major forest restoration challenge in the Pontal do Paranapanema region, aimed at protecting endangered species such as the black lion tamarin. While addressing this issue, researchers from the institute created a “map of dreams” to restore the region by connecting its main protected areas, ensuring wildlife movement and survival. But that alone was not enough. It was necessary to engage the local community, build partnerships with the private and public sectors, and mobilize people to become part of this broad collective effort to conserve biodiversity. Today, the project is about to reach the milestone of 15 million trees planted, supporting the regeneration of the Atlantic Forest, one of Brazil’s most threatened biomes. In addition, it generates income for more than two hundred people and has expanded its scope, contributing—through carbon credits—to overcoming the challenges of the climate crisis.
