Here's how we helped a 5,000-person mining company get full IT and OT visibility across 70+ mine sites. At the time, IT had a basic tool that only showed whether devices were up or down. OT networks running critical mining equipment across all remote sites had almost no monitoring at all. When something failed at a mine site, the first person to find out was usually someone on the ground. The challenge was that mine sites run on unstable satellite internet, and the security team wouldn't allow inbound traffic to critical OT networks. So the standard SolarWinds setup, which needs consistent internet and bidirectional traffic, wasn't an option. What we did for IT was replace their basic up/down tool with SolarWinds and build geographic map views that matched how devices were physically laid out at each site. Instead of just knowing a switch was down, teams could now see that Fan #3 had failed, the device was running at 39°C, and the CPU was at 77%. That shift from "alive vs dead" to "healthy vs degraded" enabled predictive maintenance instead of responding to outages. For OT, we installed remote collectors at each mine site. These small devices store up to 24 hours of data locally when the internet drops out and forward it when connectivity is restored, meaning no monitoring gaps. And because remote collectors only send data outbound, there's no inbound access to the OT network and no firewall changes needed. The result: full visibility across IT and OT at 70+ mine sites and 2 corporate offices from a single platform. Each site has its own interactive map within SolarWinds. Because when SolarWinds has enough depth of insight into your environment, it starts to surface the cost of downtime and opportunities to increase output. Things like a database query slowing down a critical system that would get 20% more output once fixed. At this point, SolarWinds starts to have a measurable impact on the bottom line. That's when senior leadership realises their "monitoring tool" has the potential to be a lot more. SolarWinds will give you data out of the box, but not necessarily the insights you want. Without the foundation work, like labelling nodes, mapping dependencies, and grouping by business services, SolarWinds doesn't understand your environment. It just monitors what you point it at. The result is alert noise, dashboards that don't help, and teams that stop trusting the tool.
