The USO Illinois Great Lakes Center offers active duty service members and their families a space for rest, relaxation, and recreation. The center features several lounge areas, recreation tables, and e-game rooms and even includes a state-of-the-art music room featuring guitars, drums, and a mixing board. To ensure the space would serve as a functional, comfortable environment, acoustical consideration was key. To address the need for acoustics without compromising the open- concept layout, K-13 in Gray and K-13 in Light Gray were utilized for the ceilings throughout the space. The applications of K-13 serve as exposed interior finishes that complement the open layout and interior design while controlling echo, reverberation, and excessive noise, which would otherwise be prevalent in a space of this type. In order to create a wide-open space, filled with large exhibits, a unique roof system of steel and timber was utilized in the Museum of Natural Curiosity. The roof system gives the museum its distinct appearance while providing necessary structural support. The museum’s extensive use of glass windows provides visitors with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, which blend seamlessly into the interior. With the high ceilings and the hard surfaces, acoustical treatment was essential. K-13 was selected and spray-applied to the unique ceiling. K-13 absorbs echo, reverberation, and excessive sound, which would have otherwise been prevalent in a space of this type, without compromising the architectural details and design. K-13 was produced in a custom color manufactured specifically for the project. In addition to acoustic performance, K-13 provides high thermal value, which helps to reduce the museum's environmental footprint. Abington High School’s auditoriums serve both the student body and community by providing a theater-like environment for school events and oftentimes civic, choral, and orchestral programs. As a result of unsightly roof leak damage and the need to upgrade the HVAC and lighting systems, the entire 11,500 square feet of asbestos-based plaster on the lath ceiling had to be demolished. Acoustic performance, cost, and maintaining the original look was very important. Custom pre-formed, curved fiberglass panels, in combination with a new drywall ceiling, created the substrate to which standard white SonaKrete was sprayed at ¾”, providing an outstanding NRC of .75. SonaKrete is a LEED Certified, spray-applied, hand-trowelled, premium acoustic finish, which eliminates the popcorn look of many other “similar” products. When it comes to durability and light reflectivity, SonaKrete is in a league all its own. Best of all, SonaKrete provides an easier and faster application. This results in SonaKrete being more cost-effective than traditional sprayed acoustic plaster systems.
