What is the scope and potential of Asian philanthropy? Nearly two years ago, that question brought together leading philanthropic organisations from across the region to launch the Commission on Asian Philanthropy. Asia is extraordinarily diverse, with no one-size-fits-all approach to philanthropy. Yet many of the challenges and opportunities we face are shared. As the Commission releases its Interim Report, Commissioners reflect on the discoveries and shared purpose that shaped this journey. Watch this launch video to hear, in their own words, the insights they hope will help strengthen philanthropy and inspire new conversations across Asia. Across Asia, philanthropy is helping to advance national priorities, strengthen communities, and contribute to long-term development goals. Real impact comes from working across sectors and capabilities—bringing together government, nonprofits, businesses, and communities to pool resources, de-risk solutions, and scale what works to achieve broader, systemic change. The Commission on Asian Philanthropy’s research is uncovering how this broader, cross-sector collaboration can strengthen the philanthropic ecosystem and unlock greater impact across the region. How do you see philanthropy contributing to systemic change? Learn more about the Commission on Asian Philanthropy and follow here for the release of its interim report this September. Policy is a powerful lever for philanthropy. As highlighted by Piramal Foundation, India’s CSR law shows how government frameworks can catalyse collaboration between corporations and communities, creating a “Triple‑Win”: higher employment, stronger supply chains, and empowered women. This is evidence that when policy aligns with values, philanthropy can scale impact and strengthen societies. This is Asian philanthropy in action—values translated into outcomes. How can philanthropy in your context better translate values into tangible outcomes for society? Philanthropy must look beyond short‑term fixes to deliver systemic change. Japan’s The Nippon Foundation demonstrates how long‑term investments in networks and social infrastructure, ranging from disability inclusion to disaster resilience, create enduring impact. Lasting progress in Asia depends on philanthropy committed to resilience, inclusion, and sustained capacity building. What long‑term investments do you see as most critical for philanthropy to drive systemic change? Corporate philanthropy in the Chinese Mainland is reshaping the landscape of public welfare. With the majority of charitable donations in the country coming from corporations, business leadership is a decisive force for innovation and impact. Tencent exemplifies this leadership, according to Liming Xiao. As Vice President of Tencent Sustainable Social Value and a representative on the Commission on Asian Philanthropy, Xiao notes that internet companies such as Tencent are harnessing digital platforms to strengthen philanthropy—a model increasingly recognised across China. This matters for our collective philanthropic impact: when corporate leadership aligns with social value, it strengthens the ecosystem that benefits communities, partners, and the region.
