Transmission and distribution overhead networks in Sweden have traditionally relied on porcelain as well as glass cap & pin insulators. But the past decades have seen composite insulators introduced in selected 50–400 kV line applications and with varying field experience. More than 1000 composite station post insulators have been put into service at 30 substations in Sweden and most were not equipped with grading ring protective devices when installed. A significant number have since begun to show evidence of deterioration and internal damage.
