I've spent a lot of this last year in rooms with policymakers, journalists and portfolio partners, all asking some version of the same question: which young people are most likely to end up NEET, and where? Today here at Impetus - Backing the best we're giving people a much better way to answer it! 'Who are NEET young people?' is our fantastic new interactive tool that follows three young people through their transition out of education, alongside a live dashboard covering every region and local authority in England, built on the Department for Education's Longitudinal Education Outcomes data. What the data shows is stark. On their own, SEND status makes a young person around 80% more likely to be NEET, low qualifications 77% more likely, and free school meals (FSM) eligibility 66% more likely. But layer FSM, SEND, and leaving school without five good GCSEs (grade 4 or above) on top of each other, and that likelihood jumps to 171%, far higher than any single factor alone. This is exactly the kind of compounding disadvantage that gets lost in national averages.
