If you're developing a Sustainable Fuels project, you may be shaping your financing conditions earlier than you think. Across the projects we’ve worked on, one pattern keeps showing up: The execution model is not just an engineering decision. It can directly influence risk allocation, performance guarantees, and financing conditions. Execution-model decisions are often treated as something to solve later in project development. But by then, some options may already be limited. An EPCM model, for example, can provide greater flexibility, while potentially leading to stricter financing conditions. And changing contractors between FEED and execution can add time, cost, and complexity. The takeaway? Your execution strategy shouldn’t follow project development. It should be part of it from the start. We captured these and other recurring decision interdependencies in our latest white paper. Want the link? What if we stopped calling CO₂ an emissions problem, and started calling it air pollution? This shift in language may sound simple, but it changes how we perceive the challenge. “Emissions” can feel technical and abstract. “Air pollution” makes the consequences more immediate, tangible, and relevant. In this excerpt from our podcast Beyond the Blueprint – Engineering perspectives on shaping tomorrow, we discuss why the way we communicate the energy transition matters and how a different framing can create greater awareness and urgency. But awareness alone is not enough. Especially in hard-to-abate sectors, sustainable fuels must move from ambition to implementation. And that requires more than promising technology. Strategic location, feedstock and renewable energy availability, financial structures, partnerships, and execution models must be aligned from the earliest stages of project development. Some conversations stay with you long after the microphones are turned off. Talking about the future of energy is easy. The more interesting question is: What does it actually take to turn ambition into projects that can be built and financed? One thing keeps coming up: technology is only part of the equation. Location, feedstock, energy availability, partnerships, risk allocation, and execution strategy are just as decisive, and many of these choices are made long before a project reaches Final Investment Decision. These are exactly the kinds of questions we explore in our podcast Beyond the Blueprint – Engineering perspectives on shaping tomorrow: going beyond individual technologies to understand what implementation really requires. We take this perspective even further in our latest white paper. 📄 Comment “white paper” and we’ll send it to you. 💬 You can also find the link in the first comment. 🎧 Listen to the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/dAgJ3yUi #ILFConsultingEngineers #EngineeringExcellence #ImprovingQualityOfLife #Engineering #FuellingTheFuture #SustainableFuels

Europe does not face three separate energy challenges. It faces one interconnected system challenge. Reducing import dependency, lowering energy costs, and decarbonizing our economy must happen simultaneously. Electrification will be central, particularly in individual mobility. But aviation, shipping, and other hard-to-abate sectors will continue to require clean molecules and sustainable fuels. The key question, therefore, is not whether these fuels are needed, but how projects can be developed competitively and at scale. This requires the early alignment of location, feedstock, energy supply, technology, financing, and execution. 🎙️ Our first podcast episode is now live! I’m excited to share the debut episode of Beyond the Blueprint - Engineering perspectives on shaping tomorrow by ILF Consulting Engineers in Austria. For this first episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Juergen Rechberger, Group Vice President Fuel Cell & Energy at AVL, about the technologies shaping the future of sustainable mobility and energy. From hydrogen and fuel cells to sustainable fuels and the challenges of scaling innovative technologies, our conversation combines technical expertise with a strategic perspective on the energy transition. Whether you work in engineering, energy, or sustainable fuels, or are simply interested in the technologies shaping our future, this episode offers valuable insights and perspectives. 🎧 Listen to the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/dAgJ3yUi

Some of the most important decisions in Sustainable Fuels projects are made long before construction begins, often in conversations like these. Europe’s Sustainable Fuels market is moving from political ambition to operational implementation. At the beginning of July, the European Commission published the list of aircraft operators covered by ReFuelEU Aviation for the 2026 reporting period. Just a few weeks earlier, it had initiated infringement proceedings against several Member States that had not yet established the required national penalty schemes. The message is clear: regulatory pressure is becoming increasingly tangible. But regulation alone will not make Sustainable Fuels projects executable or bankable. Even projects with mature technologies and strong policy support may fail to reach a Final Investment Decision when critical questions are addressed in isolation. Success requires early alignment between project developers, technology providers, feedstock suppliers, off-takers, financiers and engineering partners. Our latest white paper explores why successful Sustainable Fuels projects depend less on one individual technology and more on integrated project development from the very beginning.
