Insomnia disorder affects millions of people across the world – yet it remains under-recognized and undertreated in many healthcare systems. Current pathways for evaluation and management are suboptimal, leaving far too many people without diagnosis or access to appropriate care. A recently published position paper in Sleep Medicine calls for change. Authored by leading European and Canadian specialists, the paper makes a clear and urgent case: insomnia disorder must be recognized as a chronic condition and prioritized in public health agendas. In this new article, Antonio Olivieri, Head of Global Medical Affairs, speaks with four co-authors of the paper – Prof. Luigi Ferini Strambi, Prof. Markku Partinen, Dr. Atul Khullar, and Prof. Eduard Vieta about why insomnia disorder demands greater recognition – not only as a condition experienced at night, but as a serious medical disorder with profound implications on daytime functioning, mental and physical health, and healthcare systems worldwide. We invite you to read the full discussion below.

Talking about our sleep problems is not always easy – especially at work. For many women in midlife, insomnia disorder remains misunderstood, leaving sleep difficulties unspoken. Our new survey findings highlight the lack of awareness and stigma associated with chronic sleep problems for women aged 40-60. By improving understanding of insomnia disorder, we can begin to break this silence – opening the door to more meaningful conversations about sleep health and better support for women in the workplace.

Insomnia disorder is still underrecognized and underfunded in many public health systems despite its high burden and links to other serious health conditions. A newly published “wake-up call” position paper in Sleep Medicine – authored by sleep and mental health experts from Europe and Canada – calls for urgent policy action: ✅ Recognizing chronic insomnia as a disorder to enhance support for patients ✅ Implementing individualized clinical care and widespread sleep health programs at the community level ✅ Harmonizing access to treatments through integration of insomnia disorder in public health agendas This independent position paper is a critical reminder of the significant impact insomnia disorder has on individuals and society. At Idorsia, we support this wake-up call and are committed to elevating awareness of insomnia disorder and improving the lives of people living with the condition.
