🌍 Is downstream beneficiation really Africa's golden ticket to sustainable development, or have we “downloaded the wrong meme”? Australia and Chile have built significant mining economies without relying on downstream processing. Yet the push for African countries to move into smelting and refining is presented as the obvious answer to capturing more value from their critical minerals. ICMM CEO Rohitesh Dhawan argues that the economics may tell a different story. Watch his conversation on CNBC Africa's Face to Face podcast to hear more. Do you agree or disagree with Ro? "Rather than going down the value chain, why doesn't Africa move up it?" The conventional wisdom says African countries should move into smelting and refining to capture more value from their critical minerals. ICMM CEO Rohitesh Dhawan isn't so sure. In the latest episode of CNBC Africa's Face to Face podcast, Ro joins hosts Lanre Akinola and Sanjeev Gupta to discuss whether the downstream path is always as attractive as it seems, and whether Africa's advantage could lie further upstream as the world's leading developer of mine equipment. Where do you think African countries can capture the greatest long-term value from critical minerals? #CriticalMinerals #Africa #SustainableDevelopment #Sustainability #EnergyTransition #Geopolitics

⚡ "It's a no-brainer." That's how ICMM member Boliden describes their shift to fully electric mining operations. Boliden is a member of ICMM’s Innovation for Cleaner, Safer Vehicles (ICSV) initiative, which brings together mining companies, OEMs and technology suppliers to accelerate the shift to emissions-free mining vehicles. We sat down with Dr. Rikard Mäki (Head of Electrification and Automation, Boliden) to hear how decarbonising their fleet has been a win-win: lower costs, and a workforce that’s genuinely excited about the transition. 🎥 Learn more about ICMM’s ICSV initiative: https://lnkd.in/eahEjC2J #Decarbonisation #MiningInnovation #Electrification #CleanerMining

It is time to treat critical minerals as public goods. We don't let the market decide how many ports, bridges or railways we need. Yet, mineral supplies are at the mercy of thin and opaque markets that are easily manipulated. That must change. Government's are stepping in but we need to go further - reframing critical minerals as public goods is essential to unlock the required support, build whole-of-society consensus on responsible production, and shake the complacency that threatens our shared prosperity. Here's the case for it:

What do surviving the wilderness and running a marathon 1,119 metres underground have in common? 🏃♂️ Bear Grylls, adventurer and co-founder of BecomingX, puts it best – “the fear, the adrenaline, and the intimidation of the environment.” The new World’s Deepest Marathon documentary — sponsored by the World Gold Council and co-organised by ICMM, BecomingX, and Boliden — follows 55 runners who took on this extraordinary underground challenge. With exclusive behind-the-scenes access, the film captures the endurance, teamwork, innovation, and world-class safety standards that made the event possible – and offers a glimpse of what responsible mining looks like today.
