Hyundai Steel Company marked a milestone toward lower-carbon automotive steel production with a ceremonial event for its $5.8 billion Louisiana mill. The facility’s Direct Reduction Plant (DRP) will be designed to gradually replace natural gas with hydrogen as hydrogen infrastructure expands and supplies become more readily available, creating a pathway for greater hydrogen use in steelmaking. The mill will be operated by HYUNDAI-POSCO Louisiana Steel LLC (HPLS), a joint venture between Hyundai Steel, POSCO, Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Worldwide. Targeting commercial production in 2029, the project will establish Hyundai Steel’s first steel production base in North America and have an annual production capacity of 2.7 million metric tonnes of steel sheets, primarily for automotive applications. Production will bring three stages together at one site: Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) production, Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steelmaking and downstream processing into automotive steel. For molten steel production, this integrated route is projected to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 70 percent compared with Hyundai Steel’s conventional blast furnace process in Korea. Carbon capture capabilities will also be incorporated into the facility. The mill will provide Hyundai Motor Company, Kia and other U.S. automakers with a local source of automotive steel, strengthening supply chain resilience and shortening delivery lead times. With a design that enables future hydrogen use, HPLS will also support the long-term development of both the steel industry and the hydrogen ecosystem. - Learn more about Hyundai Steel’s Louisiana steel mill: https://lnkd.in/gmK-hK4e - Explore the process of low-carbon steelmaking: https://lnkd.in/gXah5N5m #Hyundai #Hydrogen #HTWO #HyundaiSteel #HPLS #LowCarbonSteelmaking #DRP

At HTWO ENERGY Cheongju, around 4,000 Nm³ of biogas is produced each day from locally sourced wastewater sludge and used to produce hydrogen through the waste-to-hydrogen (W2H) process. The facility produces nearly 500 kilograms of hydrogen per day, with a purity of more than 99.97% — enough to fuel around 100 Hyundai NEXO fuel cell electric vehicles. Watch the video below as a Hyundai representative guides you through each step of the W2H process at HTWO ENERGY Cheongju, from biogas production and hydrogen generation to storage and refueling. ▶️Discover the full story of HTWO ENERGY Cheongju: https://lnkd.in/gZNbApNF #Hyundai #Hydrogen #HTWO #HTWOENERGYCheongju #W2H #WasteToHydrogen
