🚢 Can Hydrogen Clean Up Global Shipping? 🌊 Maritime transport moves nearly 90% of global trade – and emits more CO₂ than aviation. As pressure to decarbonize mounts, the industry is searching for scalable alternatives to heavy fuel oil. ⚡ Enter hydrogen. With higher energy density than batteries, zero emissions at the point of use, and growing pilot projects from Norway to Japan, hydrogen is proving itself at sea. From ferries and cargo ships to bunkering hubs and hybrid designs, a maritime hydrogen ecosystem is beginning to take shape. Producing green hydrogen is only part of the energy equation. Before it reaches the customer, hydrogen may need to be compressed, liquefied, stored, and transported. Compression alone can require energy equivalent to 6–12% of hydrogen's energy content. Liquefaction can demand considerably more. These additional steps can make a significant difference to the economics of a hydrogen project. The question isn't just how much hydrogen costs to produce. It's how much it costs to deliver.
