[𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬] 𝐔𝐧𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐞 🌿🔬 As Chinese medicine evolves from traditional herbal formulations to processed supplements and bottled extracts, verifying authenticity by sight alone has become nearly impossible. In a market survey by the Hong Kong Authentication Centre of Valuable Chinese Medicines, around 60% of respondents noted that the quality of traditional Chinese medicines on the market is highly inconsistent, while over 85% agreed that scientific methods are required to safeguard product quality. At #HKBU, Professor Simon of the School of Chinese Medicine is closing this gap through analytical science. His team has pioneered advanced chemical authentication techniques that identify unique molecular markers in prized herbs such as Dendrobium officinale (鐵皮石斛), Cordyceps (冬蟲夏草), edible bird’s nest (燕窩), and Ejiao (阿膠)—providing irrefutable chemical signatures where visual inspection fails. 🌟 Key Highlights & Real-World Impact ▪️ Quality Beyond Authenticity: Developed testing methods that move beyond simple verification to assess actual quality—including identifying markers that indicate whether Cordyceps matches the qualities of higher-grade material. ▪️ Uncovering Market Risks: A commercial survey of 110 Ejiao products revealed that more than half failed to meet authentication standards, highlighting an urgent need for reliable testing. ▪️ Translating Science into Practice: These patented technologies were licensed to the Hong Kong Authentication Centre of Valuable Chinese Medicines Limited (co-founded by HKBU faculty and students) and are currently utilized by over 15 industry institutions. ▪️ Supporting Law Enforcement: In 2022, the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department engaged Professor Han’s team to authenticate intercepted Cordyceps shipments, with their reports serving as crucial evidence in legal proceedings. ▪️ Global Recognition: Awarded Gold Medals at both the First Asia Exhibition of Inventions Hong Kong and the prestigious 2021 Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions. Aligned with HKBU’s Health & Drug Discovery strategic research cluster, this initiative demonstrates how transdisciplinary research and technology translation can safeguard public health, support ethical businesses, and uphold international standards for traditional Chinese medicine. 🌾 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞? At a recent distinguished lecture jointly hosted by HKBU's Institute of Creativity and the Department of Biology at HKBU, world-renowned plant biologist Professor Deng Xingwang (University Endowed Professor of Peking University, Director of the Peking University Institute of Advanced Agricultural Sciences (PKU-IAAS) and a member of the US National Academy of Sciences ) explored how advanced molecular crop design can address global food security issues driven by climate change and population growth. Speaking to HKBU faculty and students, Professor Deng showcased the groundbreaking work of the Peking University Institute of Advanced Agricultural Sciences (PKU-IAAS). Through the "Xiashan Model", the institute bridges cutting-edge research in genomics and biotechnology with real agricultural needs—delivering high-yield, resilient crop varieties directly to farmers. From assembling the first gap-free watermelon genome to breeding disease-tolerant hybrid wheat, scientific innovation is creating tangible solutions for growers and consumers alike. HKBU remains committed to advancing transdisciplinary research in sustainability and life sciences. Special thanks to Professor Deng for sharing his vision on cultivating a more sustainable future! 🌱 Read more: https://lnkd.in/gueQbvTd Hong Kong Baptist University HKBU Faculty of Science and Technology #HongKongBaptistUniversity #HKBU #HKBUResearchOffice #HKBUResearch #HKBURO #PrecisionBreeding #PlantBiology #FoodSecurity #AgriculturalScience #TransdisciplinaryResearch #XiashanModel

⚛️𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐰𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐩𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐬: 𝐇𝐊𝐁𝐔 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞𝐬 ‘𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲’ Traditional exceptional points in non-Hermitian systems have long offered advanced potential for high-precision sensing, but they come with a catch: they require delicate parameter tuning and are strictly restricted to narrow bandwidths. To overcome these fundamental barriers, Professor Guancong MA (Chair Professor in Physics and Metamaterials) and his research team have developed a profound generalisation of the conventional exceptional point concept, known as an exceptional deficiency. By shifting the focus from isolated vectors to entire eigenspaces, this advanced framework enables defective states to emerge broadly across continuous bands rather than isolated points. Validated through active mechanical lattices with programmable electronic feedback, this breakthrough unlocks exciting possibilities for ultra-sensitive sensors with large dynamic ranges, advanced modal control, and innovative lasing technologies. Modern healthcare has long focused on treating illness after it strikes. But according to Professor Hood, one of only 20 scientists in history elected to all three U.S. National Academies and a recipient of the U.S. National Medal of Science, we are at a critical tipping point toward a data-driven paradigm of personalised health, wellness optimisation, and disease prevention. Professor Hood shared key insights on: ▪️ The power of big data and AI: Integrating genomics, phenomics, and advanced digital health tools to decode biological complexity. ▪️ P4 Medicine: Championing healthcare that is predictive, preventive, personalised, and participatory. ▪️ Bridging East and West: Unlocking the powerful synergy between Western scientific wellness and Traditional Chinese Medicine. To learn about his visionary perspective on the future of life sciences, and how data is empowering everyone to take control of their own wellbeing, read the full article: https://lnkd.in/g-tRQYtm Hong Kong Baptist University #HongKongBaptistUniversity #HKBU #HKBUResearch #HKBUResearchOffice #HKBURO #InstituteOfCreativity #IoC #SystemsBiology #PersonalisedHealth #P4Medicine #TraditionalChineseMedicine #Innovation #LifeSciences #GlobalLeaders
