Safety can mean a lot of different things, and an important thing to realize this National Safety Month is that it isn’t only physical. Yes, it can mean helping to prevent falls, managing medications carefully, and making sure patients are comfortable and cared for. But it also is an environment of calm; support through difficult decisions; and feeling comfortable enough to rest. Importantly, safety can also look like feeling seen, heard, and respected, no matter one’s background. At Heart’n Soul Hospice, creating a sense of safety and peace for ALL patients and families from any walk of life is woven into every visit, every conversation, every decision, and every moment of care.

One of the most common concerns we hear from families is this: "Does choosing hospice mean we'll have to stop seeing our doctor?" The answer is absolutely not. Hospice care is designed to work alongside your existing healthcare team. We coordinate closely with primary care physicians and specialists to ensure everyone is working toward the same goal: helping patients live as comfortably as possible. Another common misconception that goes right alongside this one is that all medications must stop. In reality, each medication is reviewed carefully with the hospice physician. If it continues to provide symptom relief or improve quality of life, it may remain part of the care plan. Hospice isn't about taking away support. It's about adding another layer of care for patients and families during a difficult season. Learn more about our care services: https://buff.ly/MYLoNb9

July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, a reminder that access to mental health support is not experienced equally across all communities. Recent national data continues to show disparities in care: Black, Hispanic, and Asian adults are significantly less likely than White adults to receive mental health services in a given year. 56% of LGBTQ+ young people who sought mental health care were unable to receive it. Behind each of these numbers are individuals and families navigating grief, illness, caregiving, and emotional strain — often without the support they need or deserve. In hospice care, we see how deeply culture, language, faith, family structure, and lived experience shape the way people process illness and loss. Care that is truly supportive must reflect that reality. At Heart’n Soul Hospice, we believe compassionate care includes listening first, honoring identity, and meeting people where they are emotionally, culturally, and spiritually. Awareness is only the beginning. Equity in care is what we continue to work toward every day.

"I didn't realize hospice provided all of this." It's one of the things we hear most often from families after hospice care begins. Many people think hospice is only about medical care. While managing pain and symptoms is an important part of what we do, hospice is so much more. Hospice care can include nurses, hospice aides, social workers, chaplains, bereavement support, medical equipment, medications related to a patient's terminal illness, and guidance for family members navigating a difficult season of life. Most importantly, it provides a team of people dedicated to helping patients live as comfortably and meaningfully as possible. We understand that many families don't learn about hospice until they suddenly need it. That's why we're committed to helping educate our community about what hospice truly is—and the support that's available when it matters most. Living with a chronic illness can be devastating for the patient and their closest loved ones. It also requires a kind of strength that many people never see. It’s all the doctor's appointments, the medication schedules, the physical limitations, and the daily adjustments. It's also the emotional weight and mental load carried by spouses, children, friends, and caregivers who are walking that journey alongside their loved one. Chronic Disease Awareness Day is an opportunity to recognize the millions of individuals and families navigating these realities every day. We know that serious illness affects more than just the body. That's why compassionate care means supporting the whole person — and the people who love them. And it’s why we’re so passionate about the holistic care we provide at all of our locations. Learn more: https://buff.ly/MYLoNb9
