You know you are among your people when you can deeply geek out about relevance and proportionality for an hour, and everyone else is right there with you. It was a fantastic first day at The Sedona Conference Working Group 1 annual meeting, where I was privileged to be a dialogue leader alongside Brett Burney, Karen Keller, Hon. Michelle Pettit and our fearless leader, Prof. Matthew Reiber. Our topic was spicy, as befits our NOLA setting: "The Intelligence is Artificial, but the Discovery Request is Real: When GenAI Use Becomes Fair Game." Three things that struck me: 🟪 We are having fun. During our dialogue this morning about the future of GenAI discovery, the room was ENGAGED. Assumptions got challenged, ideas flowed and sparks flew. This is why many of us became lawyers: solving big issues alongside great minds, all for the good of our profession and the pursuit of justice. (Is there anything better? Maybe a fresh Café du Monde beignet comes close.) 🟩 We have seen this film before. I joined Sedona years ago during the first wave of eDiscovery, when a group of dreamers set out to make sense of new tech in the legal profession. Then we did. People, process, and technology came together, propelled by Sedona's publications and by community think tanks like EDRM - Electronic Discovery Reference Model and the Electronic Discovery Institute. AI is the sequel. We have done this before and we know how to do it again. 🟪 Discovery pros are built for this moment. As the talent wars rage on for qualified AI leaders, it's no wonder that discovery experts are in hot demand. The same curiosity, rigor and skills that were forged in the eDiscovery crucible are exactly what is needed, yet remain all too rare in our profession. And that's only Day 1. Thank you, Timothy Opsitnick and the entire Sedona team for a great start to my first meeting since joining Harvey. #TheSedonaConference #eDiscovery #GenAI #LegalInnovation #LegalTech

AI Fluency is a pretty hot topic - we've got over 1,200 sign-ups for tomorrow's webinar (Can’t join live? It’ll be available on-demand.) I'll be joining Bert Vries, Theresa Spartichino, and K-Ming Lee to discuss the standout frameworks from our recent AI Fluency Framework report and their experience building firmwide AI capability at CMS Netherlands and Ropes & Gray LLP. My main aim with the report was to make it widely applicable and immediately actionable for anyone leading AI enablement. Having rolled out AI platforms at scale, I knew product usage data offers one of the clearest signals of a person’s fluency, so I based the fluency levels on it. In the past, that often meant manually exporting data to run the analysis I wanted. When initially planning the report, I certainly didn’t expect Harvey's Command Center to be able to take the report and map AI fluency across every user in a single prompt. But here we are! Anyone who's done this by hand will appreciate how cool this is. Here’s a sneak peek at one of tomorrow’s slides. As well as hearing from the panel, every registrant will receive the AI Fluency Framework plus a bonus companion guide on applying it in lean organisations, where the innovation team may be small or non-existent. It also outlines my suggested approach to mapping users to fluency levels with a few short survey questions, if your tools don't surface these data points in the analytics panel. The registration link is in the comments.
