Does an ageing vessel necessarily mean declining performance? Not when you have the right data, insights and expertise to identify opportunities for improvement. In the maritime industry, vessel age is often associated with reduced efficiency and higher operating costs. But age alone does not determine performance. In her latest article, Serena Lim PhD FRINA CEng, Director, Customer Success Management at GTT Marine, explores how data-driven insights and operational expertise can help operators unlock the potential of ageing vessels, improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions and extend their competitive lifespan. From identifying performance gaps to implementing measurable improvements, the article highlights why understanding how a vessel operates matters more than simply knowing its age. At GTT Marine, we believe that digitalisation delivers its greatest value when reliable data, advanced technology and people work together to turn insights into action. 📖 Read Serena’s full article and discover how a data-driven approach can help ageing vessels perform better: https://lnkd.in/ew2dciem #GTTMarine #VesselPerformance #MaritimeDigitalisation #Decarbonisation #OffshoreSupportVessels Ascenz Marorka

SMM 2026 is a wrap 🐸 Feet are sore, head is still spinning, new business cards are plenty, and the conversations were really great. Before the show, I said you'd have to kiss a few frogs before finding what actually moves the needle for your fleet. A week in Hamburg later, here's the update: the industry is ready to make change - but everyone's kissing from a very different pond. 📋 Some are just getting started, working with very limited data 📊 Others are deep into in-house spreadsheets, held together by formulas only one or two people still know how to manage 📡 Some are already live-streaming vessel data at 1Hz 🤖 And a few are far down the road with full AI-powered solutions Wherever you sit on that scale, one thing doesn't change: no frog turns into a prince without clean, reliable data. It's the raw material every meaningful decision - human or AI-assisted - actually runs on. We are ready to help you in any Pond... Bonus info Johnny M. Garrett Jr. American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and I meet first time 12 years ago in Singapore when we had girls in the same school - still in contact still in business this is shipping... "We can now identify where fuel can be saved, and improve overall efficiency." Penguin Shipyard, one of the world's leading builders of aluminium commercial vessels, shares how visibility into vessel performance data changed outcomes, for their operations and for their clients. Join us at OSJ Asia, 9-10 September, Singapore. Learn more below.

SMM week 1-4th September. Time to see who's actually walking the talk on greener shipping. Greener shipping only scales if it also makes economic sense. Not "someday" sense but sense today, for the owner staring at a P&L. Efficiency tech as air lubrication, wind-assist, hull appendages, coatings etc. pays off regardless of which fuel eventually wins. Solid business case. But let's be honest: not every solution works for every vessel or trade pattern. You're going to kiss a few frogs 🐸 before you find what actually moves the needle for your fleet and trade. That's where data why data matters. Without reliable vessel data, you're guessing which frog is a prince. With it, you can measure what actually saves fuel, drop what doesn't, and put real numbers behind the next investment instead of a hunch. At SMM, I'm looking for exactly that sweet spot where tech and data crates value now, not just decarbonization stories for 2050. When an incident happens at sea, the first question from investigators, insurers, and legal teams is always the same: what does the data show? A Voyage Data Recorder is the authoritative record of what happened on board. Speed, heading, radar, audio, AIS - everything that matters in the hours before and during an incident. If that data is incomplete, inaccessible, or stored on legacy hardware that takes days to retrieve, it doesn't just complicate the investigation. It complicates your legal and commercial position. Modern IMO regulations have raised the bar on what VDRs must capture and how that data must be accessible. Many vessels in operation today are running systems that were certified years ago, under older standards, with limited integration into the digital infrastructure now expected across the fleet. Replacing a VDR is not a discretionary upgrade. It's a compliance event, a risk management decision, and increasingly, a condition of operating competitively in regulated trades. The question isn't whether your VDR meets the minimum standard. It's whether it meets the standard you'd want behind you if something went wrong
