Understanding Turkish law today begins with knowing the people and institutions that shaped it. ⠀ With MEHAZ | KÖKLER, our new series at GSI, we explore Turkish legal history through their stories. ⠀ From early Turkic legal traditions to the Ottoman period and the Republic, we will trace the contributions of the jurists, scholars and statesmen who influenced legal thought, and the institutions through which their ideas took root. ⠀ From the jurists who prepared the Mecelle to the figures who led the Republic’s legal reforms, from law schools to judicial institutions, we will explore the circumstances in which they worked, the questions they confronted and the legacy they left behind. ⠀ We will examine legal texts, concepts and the influence of different legal traditions through the people and institutions that interpreted, developed and carried them forward. ⠀ Our aim is to bring these stories into view—and to discover how their legacy lives on in Turkish law today. ⠀ Our journey begins next Monday, 26 October, with the first episode. ⠀ MEHAZ | KÖKLER The people and institutions at the roots of Turkish law.

The Journey of Artificial Legal Intelligence – Napoleon Bonaparte – When Law Became a System Before machines could read the law, the law first had to become structured enough to be read. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, France was one nation on the map but remained divided by a forest of legal traditions. Northern customs, Roman law, royal ordinances, feudal privileges and local courts often produced different rules for property, marriage and inheritance. When Napoleon Bonaparte became First Consul, he inherited this legal labyrinth. In 1800, four jurists—Tronchet, Portalis, Bigot de Préameneu and Maleville were appointed to bring centuries of legal thought into a unified structure. Napoleon was not the Code’s sole author, but he became the political force determined to see it completed. On 21 March 1804, thirty-six laws were brought together in a Civil Code containing 2,281 articles. The Code abolished many privileges of birth and strengthened property, contract and civil authority. Yet its order was not equally just. It reinforced the authority of husbands over wives and fathers over households, demonstrating that law can become clearer without becoming equally free. As French armies crossed Europe, administrators carried the Code behind them. Flags eventually fell and borders changed, but parts of its legal architecture remained. Its importance to artificial legal intelligence lies in this transformation. The Code did not make legal judgment mechanical. But it arranged law into numbered rules, ordered paths and repeatable forms. It helped turn scattered legal traditions into a system that could be searched, compared, interpreted and applied. Long before machines could read the law, the law had begun to speak in a language they might understand. The cannons fell silent. The articles kept marching. #TheJourneyOfArtificialLegalIntelligence #NapoleonBonaparte #NapoleonicCode #CivilCode #LegalHistory #LegalAI #ArtificialIntelligence #ComputationalLaw #LegalTechnology #NewMindAI

Introducing What Comes After AI in Law? One Hundred Questions for the Future of Law The question is no longer whether artificial intelligence will enter legal practice. It already has. It can search, compare, synthesise and draft in minutes what once demanded days of human effort. That reality calls for neither denial nor panic. It calls for a harder inquiry: When routine intellectual work is no longer a human monopoly, where does legal judgment begin and what, precisely, remains ours to decide? Today, Göksu Safi Işık Attorney Partnership launches What Comes After AI in Law?: a 100 part series examining how artificial intelligence will reshape not only legal work, but also authority, responsibility, institutional trust and the meaning of justice itself. One hundred questions. One hundred answers. One unfolding argument about what law becomes next. The journey moves deliberately from the lawyer’s desk to the foundations of law itself, across ten fields of inquiry: 1. The Lawyer’s Desk - where legal value moves when research, synthesis and first drafts become abundant 2. Apprenticeship & Seniority - how lawyers develop judgment when machines perform much of the work through which juniors once learned 3. The Client’s Perspective - what clients will value and pay for when legal information is no longer scarce 4. Law Firm Architecture & Management - how talent, knowledge, economics and competitive scale will be reorganised 5. In-House & Preventive Law — how legal functions move from reacting to disputes to governing risk before it materialises One question will return at three decisive levels professional advice, institutional decision-making and adjudication: If a system reaches the right legal conclusion but cannot reveal the reasoning that produced it, can counsel defend it, can a board rely on it, and can a court make it the basis of judgment? This series is not an exercise in predicting which legal tasks will disappear. It asks where judgment, value and responsibility will move next—and what the legal profession must become in response. Its architecture is deliberate, but the conversation remains open. Which of these territories will most profoundly affect your practice? What question is the legal profession still failing to ask? We invite you to add it. The strongest contributions may help shape the journey ahead. Our continuing series, Artificial Legal Intelligence, examines how we arrived here. What Comes After AI in Law? begins with the choices now before us. Tomorrow, Question 01: When Legal Knowledge Becomes Abundant, What Remains Scarce? #WhatComesAfterAIinLaw Göksu Safi Işık Attorney Partnership

The Journey of Artificial Legal Intelligence - Lee Loevinger For centuries, law was interpreted through doctrine, precedent, and argument. The next challenge was to determine whether legal knowledge could also be measured, tested, and analysed. The journey continues with: Lee Loevinger - Jurimetrics - When Law Became Measurable.
