A successful surgery doesn’t always mean a successful recovery. For some patients, persistent pain can continue long after a surgical wound has healed. Post-Surgical Neuropathic Pain (PSNP) remains an important but under-recognised consequence of surgery. Greater understanding, research and innovation are needed to improve recognition, diagnosis and care, and help close the gap between surgery and true recovery. Learn more about PSNP and the importance of advancing pain research 👇 #WeAreGrünenthal #WorldFreeofPain #NeuropathicPain #PainScience

What could the future of neuropathic pain management look like if we challenge today’s limitations? Up to 40% of all chronic pain cases have a neuropathic origin. As #IASP2026 marks the 'Year of Neuropathic Pain,' there is a shared commitment across the scientific community to challenge the long-standing perceptions surrounding this form of pain. Too often, the distinct mechanisms driving this pain, from ion channels to brain function, are overlooked. Evolving the standard of care means moving to a mechanism-based approach, making management as specific as the pathology itself. We look forward to attending IASP 2026 in Bangkok (26–30 October) alongside other experts and leaders committed to transforming pain care. "Unfortunately, we cannot help you." Too many people living with chronic pain have heard these words before. In the fifth and final episode of Beyond the Ache, Prof. Dr. Heike Rittner, Professor and Head of the Center for Interdisciplinary Pain Research at University Hospital Würzburg, and Prof. Dr. Uli Brödl, Chief Scientific Officer at Grünenthal, discuss how advances in pain research are opening up new possibilities for treating chronic pain. Looking back at the scientific progress in pain research, they touch on biomarkers, sodium-channel blockers, and AI. #WeAreGrünenthal #WorldFreeofPain #PainAwarenessMonth #ChronicPain

Chronic pain can affect far more than the body, it can gradually change everyday routines, relationships and a person’s sense of self. In Episode 4 of our podcast Beyond the Ache, health psychologist and cognitive neuroscientist Dr. Emma Biggs helps us understand the close connection between pain and the brain. She explains how thoughts and emotions can shape the experience of pain and why self-compassion can help people navigate life with chronic pain. Listen to Episode 4 to learn more about the connection between the mind and the experience of pain. #WeAreGrünenthal #WorldFreeofPain #PainAwarenessMonth #ChronicPain #MentalHealth

Pain is personal. But the words, beliefs and experiences that surround us can shape how we understand and even feel it. In Episode 3 of our podcast Beyond the Ache, researcher Dr Sabrina Coninx explores the role culture plays in the experience of pain, including why the words we use to describe it differ across cultures. In one study, for example, practising Catholics reported lower pain levels while viewing an image of the Virgin Mary. These insights remind us that understanding chronic pain requires looking beyond biology and considering each person’s broader context.
