If you know me, you know I am on the road all the time. For at least the last year, the two themes I have heard most about in my travels at conferences, trade shows, or meetings at clients’ offices are Data Centers and Affordability – for good reason. These are the two defining challenges/opportunities for our industry to manage in both the very near-term and for the foreseeable future. What’s more, they are inextricably linked. At GridX, we are building software solutions that help manage the entire lifecycle of a utility rate or program. More and more our clients are thinking about rate design and customer rate education in the context of solving their affordability challenges. I believe the work we have done in this piece called Bending the Cost Curve is incredibly timely and critically important for our industry. If you’re like me, however, this concept of bending the cost curve may not be obvious and/or intuitive. So, to add to the report in this post, I went to Nano Banana to help me make it easy to quickly understand. As you can see, the simple distillation of bending the cost curve is “using rate design to drive energy usage behaviors that creates savings for the grid and, thus, lower costs for all”. Please take time to read (links in the comments) and reach out when you are ready to learn how our solutions can help your utility bend the overall cost curve.

You're probably thinking AI Data Centers are a load liability, right? But what if we told you Hyperscale Data Centers can be transformed into a grid asset?
- LINKEDIN · IMAGERecorded 21 Sept 2026
Bending the Cost Curve requires the speed to design, model, and implement complex tariffs (like interruptible/VPP riders) faster than ever before. Learn how rate agility protects equity and ensures proper cost recovery for large loads.

Bending the Cost Curve transforms passive load growth into active grid assets. It means leveraging data center flexibility (VPPs, Load Shifting) to enhance stability and resiliency during times of peak demand. Download the guide to see how sophisticated tariffs enable this.

Stop viewing data centers as pure liabilities. Bending the Cost Curve means leveraging their unique load profile to make them a net positive asset that contributes to grid stability and minimizes peak cost pressure. See the full playbook for the actionable strategy.

Bending the Cost Curve means aligning customer energy use with the true cost of service, creating incentives to shift usage away from high-cost peak periods. For the AI Era, this protects ratepayers from funding massive data center infrastructure. Stop guessing, get the strategy.
