🏢 Similar to a building, what holds an AI system up is often what you don’t see. Beneath a building’s facade are the crucial elements that maintain the structure’s integrity. And that also holds for AI in governance, proxy voting and stewardship workflows. Under the surface are the data, methodology, and subject-matter expertise that shape a system from the outset. Our new explainer illustrates this difference between designing AI around a finished product and engineering it from the ground up, based on: - 23 years of governance expertise - Data and methodology designed for the intended use - Expert oversight embedded from design onward - Continuous review and refinement after launch 🔗 Read the explainer to learn more about Glass Lewis’ approach to artificial intelligence in governance, stewardship and proxy voting. We borrow the language of construction – foundations, blueprints, load paths – to show how a system like this is actually put together. https://lnkd.in/ezAYmpHR #artificialintelligence #ai #proxyvoting #corpgov #stewardship

The use of AI in proxy voting solutions raises a question: where does human judgment govern the process? A “human-in-the-loop” can describe very different operating models. In one model, AI handles production, then analysts review outputs at the end. In another, governance expertise shapes the methodology, decision rules, monitoring, and final outputs from the start. That distinction matters. Here are three takeaways from our new explainer: ↗️ AI-first pipelines can process high volumes of meetings, apply policy rules consistently, and help surface potentially contentious votes. 🌐 An expertise-governed model embeds analyst judgment into data models, normalization rules, scenario mapping, monitoring, and escalation points. 📝 Accountability depends on process design. Asset managers should assess whether expert judgment governs what an AI system can recommend, when its outputs requires review, and how it adapts as governance practices evolve. AI is increasingly being used across financial services. For stewardship, proxy voting, and investment teams, the criteria for evaluating AI-powered solutions are evolving. Our second white paper in our Investor-Grade AI thought leadership series, 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑭𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑴𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝑴𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝑻𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒐𝒅𝒆𝒍, examines why trusted data and human-centric AI will define the next era of investment stewardship. Here are three key takeaways: 1. Trusted data is the foundation. AI outputs are only as reliable as the data beneath them. For stewardship and investment workflows, that means data must be accurate, consistent, traceable, timely, secure, and governed in a way that supports defensible analysis, audit trails, client reporting, and more consistent decision-making across teams. 2. Speed alone does not create confidence. AI can accelerate research, summarize disclosures, identify patterns, and scale workflows. But in governance and proxy voting, outputs must also be explainable, reproducible, auditable, and appropriate for the decision at hand. 3. Human judgment remains central. For more than two decades, Glass Lewis has helped investors navigate complex governance and stewardship decisions across global markets. That experience shapes how we define investor-grade governance data, build methodologies, and apply AI within a human-centric framework designed to preserve transparency, traceability, and trust.
