Geopolitical tensions are once again driving up energy prices, and European manufacturers in the food, confectionery and baking industry are feeling the pressure. In Europe, energy costs are around 3 to 4 times higher than, for example, in the USA. For many manufacturing companies, this has become a lasting cost factor that is putting pressure on margins. Companies in the FMCG sector know the situation: production is running, orders are coming in, but the energy bill is eating up a growing share of the result. As a machine manufacturer, we can take a close look at where energy consumption is highest in packaging lines and what can realistically be improved there using available technology. Every component consumes electricity. But some offer significantly more savings potential than others. Vacuum pumps are a good example. They grip, hold and transport. Nothing works without them. They run all day, every shift, often without anyone knowing exactly what that means in kWh. Vacuum pumps can account for up to 30% of the total energy consumption of a packaging line. Together with our customers, we took a closer look at their vacuum pump drives and ultimately achieved energy savings of up to 40%. Simply by switching to more efficient technology. We take it as part of our responsibility to find the best possible solution for our customers and today's challenges. Where in your production line do you suspect the biggest hidden energy consumers?

A customer of mine in the Netherlands had a machine running for 12 years. Reliable, but their throughput requirements had changed. An upgrade would have cost 600-700k. It just didn't add up anymore. So we did something different. We bought the machine back. That money went straight into their new line investment, which made the whole business case work for them. The old machine went to Crailsheim. Our team checked operating hours, replaced the camera systems, overhauled the gearboxes, and fitted new format sets for a completely different product. A few months later it started a second life at another customer, in a market where a fully refurbished Schubert machine at a lower entry price was exactly what they needed. With warranty, of course. Three parties benefit. The original customer frees up capital for the next step. The new customer gets a proven machine and a first real experience with our automation. And a machine that would otherwise be scrapped keeps running for another decade or more. This only works because we guarantee parts availability for 20 to 25 years. Longevity is not a marketing line for us, it is engineered in from day one. When you retire a production line, what usually happens to it in your business?

Reklamationen folgen. Und das ist noch der einfache Teil. Danach beginnt die Koordination: Wer ist zuständig? Welche Maschinen-Lieferanten sind betroffen? Wer ruft wen an? Sie stecken in allem, was danach kommt.

Three years ago, we started Mission Blue to future-proof Schubert. Looking back on 2025, we are sharing where we stand for the first time in a fully digital format: our ANNUAL 2025. It brings together our sustainability magazine, our annual report and our ESRS reporting, structured around the four fields of action that guide us: sustainable corporate management, climate-friendly production, eco-friendly machines and services, and sustainable packaging. For most of our customers, the third field matters most. The question we hear is simple: how much energy can a packaging system actually save? Quite a lot, as it turns out. On existing Schubert systems, new glue units cut consumption by 35 percent, and optimised robot motion saves another 10 to 20 percent. Our new machine generation is passively cooled by air instead of water, so the cooling needs almost no energy at all. In our Packaging Competence Center, we are developing packaging that works without glue or plastic. And because we hold ourselves to the same standard, we reduced our own Scope 1 and 2 emissions by more than a third over the past five years, while our output grew by 32 percent. Which of these levers would make the biggest difference on your line? https://lnkd.in/eMZNrUKH

A few years ago, one of my first bigger projects as a sales manager was five minutes down the road. Hosta produces Nippon in Stimpfach, just around the corner from our factory in Crailsheim. Almost 90% of Germans know those little rice waffles, and our two companies have worked together since the 1980s. So when Hosta wanted to rethink their packaging line from the ground up, we sat down early. Early enough that the tray, the film and the carton were all still open questions. The closeness changed how we worked. Instead of long email threads, we just got in the car. Five minutes to their production, or they came over to see the machines here on site. Decisions that would normally take weeks happened in an afternoon. Max Schäuble from Hosta later summed it up in one sentence: "We just get in the car and drive over." Today the line runs with 18 machine frames, 28 pick-and-place robots, and 2,500 products per minute. But honestly, the number I am most proud of is a smaller one. 10 millimetres. That is how much we managed to shorten the tray, because the robots nail the placement every single time. From there, the film got tighter, and the shipping carton went from three parts down to one. Nine cartons per pallet layer instead of eight. Fewer trucks on the road for every batch that leaves the factory. Small millimetres, real impact. And a good reminder for me that the best savings rarely show up in the headline spec, they show up when both sides are still willing to question everything. When was the last time an early conversation saved you more than a late optimisation ever could? PS: Yes, that's me on the yellow couch... a few years ago, filming the success story with Hosta.
