The most rewarding part of my job is hearing directly from learners. I’ve had conversations with GED students across the country and around the world. Every time, two truths hit me hard: 1) Education unlocks opportunity. 2) One person believing in you can change everything. Recently, I sat down with Lillie, a GED Grad Awardee. After facing serious challenges at home and with mental health, she made a decision: to bet on herself. With the support of her partner, she took the leap and earned her GED. Her words stuck with me: “You are the only one holding you back. It all starts with you.” That’s not just advice for GED students. That’s a call to action for anyone who’s ever felt stuck, overlooked, or underestimated. This is what the GED does. It’s not just a test—it’s a turning point. My grandfather earned his GED after returning from military service. Because of his encouragement, I was the first in my family to attend college after high school. I’ve seen firsthand how education can change lives, especially for those often left behind by the system. I’ve met parents who pursued their GED diploma so their children could see what’s possible. That one step helped break generational cycles of poverty. Education opens doors. But employers must look beyond degrees. GED graduates have already proven their grit and learning ability. Let’s recognize skills, not just credentials. A skills-first mindset isn’t just good for people — it’s good for business. According to Deloitte, companies that hire for skills are: • 57% more agile • 107% better at placing talent • 98% more likely to retain top performers Alternative pathways work. For families. For employers. For the future. #SkillsFirst #GEDWorks #HireForSkills #FutureofWork
