An AI video edit can put points in order. Jason Oberholtzer on the contextual judgment it can't make: what's worth your attention.

What’s the most powerful technology on earth? It isn’t AI. On this month’s Gather Signal: • Joshua Schneider ranked storytelling above fire and the wheel. A good story beats facts, and GenAI’s “very competent slop” has yet to prove it can close the deal. • Kirsten C. says agentic commerce is betting against instinct. About 80% of retail sales still happen in stores, and discovery is the point. • Christophe Jammet says AI writing feels uncanny because it’s missing chaos, the source of what makes our stories worth telling. • Jason Oberholtzer says an AI edit can put points in order, but only a person's culturally contextual judgement decides what’s worth your attention. 𝗧𝗗𝗟𝗥: you can’t have a good story without conflict, and the human experience thrives in the presence of the right kind of friction. AI is really good at getting middling, dreadful, time-sucking work that we hate doing. So why do we keep pointing it at the work that depends on a connection to one's flawed humanity and lived experience? I see people all over my feeds outsourcing so much of themselves to AI, contributing to the uncanny homogenization of creative output, while the unsexy stuff: systematizing things and automating the busywork, goes untouched. How I use AI across the Gather Signal itself is a great example: we use AI across post-production, using it to scale, structure, and coordinate the merchandizing of the primary work, including paid media, shorts production, and reporting. What we *don't* do is let it near the recording or editing of the full episode. That's where the delta in quality shows up (IMO).
