Why aren't we backing British businesses? This week, Oli Barrett MBE speaks with Shevaun Haviland, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce, about one of the biggest challenges facing the UK's economy. Forty years ago, around half of UK pension fund investments were invested in British businesses. Today, that figure is closer to 5%. Shevaun argues that Britain has always excelled at innovation, but has become less confident when it comes to investing in its own success. She also believes more businesses should think internationally from the very beginning. For many companies, exporting still feels like a risk. But could expanding beyond the UK become one of the fastest ways to unlock long-term growth? 🎧 Listen to the full conversation now. Elif Shafak is joining Future Forum. The award-winning novelist will sit down with Mbongiseni Buthelezi, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, to ask a simple question: who gets to imagine the future? Their conversation, takes place in the Vision Hall on Wednesday 14 October at 13:30. They'll look at how imagination, culture and creative courage can challenge accepted ideas, and how we build a future that is more human, hopeful and shared. Elif has published 21 books, translated into 58 languages, including The Island of Missing Trees and 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in this Strange World, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. She is President of the Royal Society of Literature and speaks widely on women's rights, LGBTQ+ rights and freedom of expression. Her work sits where storytelling meets politics, history and public life. That is the kind of crossover Future Forum exists to bring together. Future Forum runs 14 to 15 October at Town Hall, King's Cross, with leaders, founders, researchers, investors, policymakers and creatives from very different worlds in the same room.
