It was a pleasure to sit down with Cameron B. for Business Focus Magazine to talk about what we're really trying to do at Furnitubes International Ltd. Not the products. The outcome. Modular design, sustainability, colour — these are just some of the ways we try to get there. What we're really working toward is a space that earns its place in a community. That people genuinely connect with. That's still doing its job decades from now. The full article is linked in the comments. #PublicRealm #UrbanDesign #Placemaking #Furnitubes #DesignForPeople

I joined the Built Barriers workshop last week, hosted by The Developer and Festival of Place of Place and Part W, and it’s been sitting with me since. We were talking about the kinds of obstacles that make cities feel harder to move through, especially for women. Things like poor lighting, out-of-order lifts tucked away in isolated corners, long walks through disconnected spaces, and streets that feel unsafe after dark. One barrier stood out more than I expected: scale. Large, open spaces, the kind created by car-first planning, can actually make people feel less safe. Instead of freedom, they create a sense of exposure. Discomfort. A lack of natural surveillance. In trying to design for efficiency or flow, we’ve created places that feel anonymous and unsafe. If we want our cities to be safer and more equitable, dialling back the dominance of the car is one way to start making them feel more human again. It’s a shift I’m glad to be part of through our work at Furnitubes International Ltd, supporting more pedestrian-first, people-focused public spaces across the UK. Smaller, more connected places. Places to pause. Spaces designed with comfort, care and visibility in mind. If this is something you’re thinking about in your own projects, I’d love to hear how you’re approaching it. #UrbanDesign #PublicRealm #Pedestrianisation #WomenInTheCity #PlaceMaking #Furnitubes Image credit: Illustration by Tanatswa Borerwe, created as part of the previous Built Barriers workshop by Part W.

After years in this industry, I’ve never been more certain: sustainability isn’t an add-on. It’s the foundation. Recently, I wrote for NBS | Powered by Hubexo about why the street furniture industry is at a crossroads, and what’s at stake if we continue to design for replacement instead of resilience. Outdoor furniture is often treated as disposable, but every piece specified represents materials, carbon, transportation, energy and care. It should earn its place in our public spaces and keep it for generations. At Furnitubes International Ltd, we’re trying to ask better questions at every stage: How long will it last? What happens at the end of its life? Can we design for disassembly? Can we source more responsibly? In this article (linked below), I share some of what we’ve learned so far. If you’re also working on your sustainability journey, as a manufacturer, designer, or decision-maker, get in touch - I’d love to compare notes. #SustainableDesign #UrbanFurniture #LongTermThinking #PublicRealm

Sustainability is a big word. And when you’re an SME trying to measure it, it can feel even bigger. With new industry requirements and legislation on the horizon, proper carbon reporting isn’t just a nice-to-have. It’s something we need to understand, deliver, and build into how we work. At Furnitubes, we’ve been on that journey. We’re figuring out what sustainability reporting means for a business of our size, and what it takes to move from intention to action. This week, we shared the first entry in our Sustainability Journal. It’s a behind-the-scenes look at questions we’re grappling with, the progress we’re making, and the things that are still hard to measure. We’re sharing it not just for transparency, but because we know others are facing the same questions. If you're on a similar path, making sense of Scope 1 and 2 or just starting to think about Scope 3, I’d love to compare notes. 📖 You can find the article in the first comment 💬 Leave a comment or message me if you’d like to chat. #SustainabilityInPractice #CarbonReporting #SustainabilityJournal #Furnitubes

I joined the The Developer and Festival of Place Climate Resilience this week and took a lot away from a presentation by Jonathan Smales on The Phoenix in Lewes, a project by Human Nature that reimagines how we build communities for people and planet. Jonathan described himself as a “campaigning developer”, and the phrase stayed with me. It captures something the property sector doesn’t talk about often enough: conviction. A belief that development can be a force for social and environmental good. The Phoenix shows what that can look like: 🏡 12 architects working together to bring diversity and character to the neighbourhood 🚶♀️ Car-light streets that prioritise walking, cycling and shared outdoor space 🌳 Green infrastructure and rain gardens managing water naturally 🤝 A local, sustainable economy rooted in community and craft 🧱 Standard build systems making quality design more affordable and accessible Over 900 people have already expressed interest in moving there, mostly drawn by the promise of community and low-car streets. Projects like this show that leadership in the built environment is as much about direction as it is about delivery. We need more voices in development who lead with conviction, and more belief in the idea that place can drive meaningful change. #Placemaking #PublicRealm #UrbanDesign #ThePhoenixLewes #FestivalOfPlace #DesignForPeople #SustainableDevelopment
