A few years ago, a 60 hectare block of Hindmarsh Valley National Park in South Australia was cleared pasture. Today, with the support of our partners at One Tree Planted and Department for Environment and Water, it tells a different story: - An endangered orange daisy is spreading across ground it once only survived on the margins of - Prescribed burns are being used deliberately, to bring back the post-fire conditions native bandicoots need - Swamp rats and bush rats are returning, a quiet sign the food web beneath them is starting to work again - The case is building to connect this park to neighbouring land, giving species like Rosenberg's goanna room to actually survive. We visited the site with regional ecologist Anthony Abley to see the work up close. It isn't fast, and it isn't finished. But paddock by paddock, the layers are coming back. World Rainforest Day: why connectivity matters as much as size Today is World Rainforest Day, and alongside the focus on stopping clearing and protecting old growth, there's a less visible piece worth highlighting: connectivity. A protected area, however large, behaves like an island if it's cut off from everything around it. Wildlife populations become genetically isolated, lose the ability to move with fire or climate shifts, and have no path to return once a species is lost locally. This is why so much of our work happens at the edges of parks, not just inside them. Working alongside private landholders, we help protect and restore habitat on land adjoining existing reserves, closing the gaps between protected areas rather than leaving them as scattered islands. Corridors like this deliver outsized value: → Maintaining genetic diversity across wider populations → Supporting climate adaptation as species shift range → Enabling natural recolonisation after fire or other disturbance → Increasing effective habitat size without one enormous acquisition A smaller, well placed parcel that links two reserves can do more for long term species survival than a much larger isolated one. It's a strategic way to grow the national park network, turning individual protected areas into a genuinely connected landscape. When Gruen puts Australia's full bush in the same sentence as Beckham's balls, you know you've made it 🌳 After all, Bringing Back The Bush is all about sparking conversations that are loud, a little cheeky and impossible to ignore. 🌿 "We’re living in a national park - we’ve just put a city on it." We couldn't have said it better ourselves. Costa Georgiadis was right at home as he joined ABC News Breakfast on World Environment Day to chat all things bush, why it matters and how every Australian can help bring it back.

We're proud to share our 2025 Impact Report — Projects That Make a Difference . This year marked 55 years of conservation for FNPW. And what a year it was. We helped secure 29,479 hectares of land for permanent national park protection across three landmark acquisitions. The Growling Grass Frog returned to Winton Wetlands. The Curb Wombat Mange Program delivered 18,582 treatments across NSW. Over 1.2 million native plants were grown and planted up to 2025 through our community nursery network. None of it happens alone. Behind every number is a partnership, a volunteer, a donor, a Traditional Custodian, a scientist, or a community group showing up for nature. Our 2025 Impact Report tells the full story: the projects, the places, the people and the outcomes that defined this year.
