"Will AI leave me out of a job?” This is the question echoing through teams everywhere today, and it’s not fading. Recent Gallup data shows that Gen Z’s sentiment towards AI has shifted sharply in the past year with excitement falling 14 points, and anxiety remaining high at 42%. As generative AI becomes a part of everyday work, employees are increasingly questioning their job security, relevant skills, and where their careers are headed next. When teams are navigating this level of uncertainty, disengagement tends to emerge. But this disengagement is not driven by adapting to the difficulty of learning something new, it comes from feeling uninformed, unheard, and underprepared. So what should managers do? 1. Address AI anxiety directly. Pretending AI is not disruptive does not make your team feel any more stable. Instead, it makes the change feel more unclear, distant, and threatening. 2. Help your team build familiarity through hands-on practice. Comfort with AI relies on giving your team a space to try, reflect, and understand how these tools can fit into their work instead of replacing it. 3. Create conversations to debrief practice. Hands-on practice only sticks when followed by conversation. After your team tries something new, create room to talk about what feels useful, uncomfortable, confusing, or uncertain. Conversation is how anxiety gets named, addressed, and worked through. This is exactly where human skills become critical. At FlyingPenguins, we help managers practice conversations that define moments of change. When leaders strengthen their own human skills, that confidence, clarity, and ability to listen carries into the entire team. The future of work is not only shaped by efficiency and speed, but by the teams that know how to communicate, adapt, and align when change strikes.
