Which behavioural indicators could help lenders better understand loan repayment risk in the future? We sat down with Christopher Ball, Co-Founder of Finch Technologies, to get his perspective on how behavioural data could support future assessments. “Determining which behaviours are most likely to contribute to someone defaulting on a loan is something we've been on the ground working to understand. Our transaction categorisation engine allows us to get a much more granular view of a customer's financial behaviour, including where they're spending their money, where they're saving, and ultimately what they're doing on a day-to-day basis. With this level of insight, we're able to build a much clearer picture of which behaviours are associated with higher or lower lending risk. It may not always be the obvious indicators you think of. Sometimes it's the alternative behavioural signals, such as how much someone is spending on Uber Eats deliveries each month, how many gambling transactions they have, how much they're spending on entertainment and alcohol, or how consistently they're saving. Individually, these signals may not be the deciding risk factor, but together they build a behavioural profile that helps predict the likelihood of similar spending patterns continuing in the months ahead. Over time, these models can also identify changes in behaviour, such as increasing discretionary spending or declining savings, which may indicate a shift in financial risk. This is the type of data we're exploring as we build more predictive risk models that lenders can use to strengthen their credit and risk assessment criteria” The opportunity is to understand financial behaviour as a pattern, rather than relying on any one transaction or category in isolation.
