Why is gas suddenly everywhere in AI infrastructure? It comes down to speed-to-token due to constraints on the electrical grids in regions where gas popularity has grown. It's just the fastest way to power the GPUs generating the tokens customers actually want, and right now, speed wins. But sustainability isn't going anywhere. Every operator I talk to is signed up to ESG goals, SDGs, Scope 3 reporting especially in Europe. That stuff is shaping how people are thinking long-term, even if it's not driving today's decisions. Which is why fuel cells like Bloom Energy are starting to get really interesting. Same gas, but you're running it through an electrochemical process instead of burning it, so you strip out the sulphites and nitrogen oxides. You're still emitting CO2 unless you go hydrogen, but it's a real step forward. There's a quiet hand-off happening. Speed-to-token is calling the shots today, but the cleaner pathways are catching up faster than most people realise. Most AI benchmarks test questions that already have an answer key. The hardest, highest-value problems in science, medicine, and engineering are still unsolved — no one knows what a correct answer even looks like. Meet TRACES 🧭 — the world's first standard for measuring discoverative AI: AI directed at reaching conclusions nobody has reached yet. Proposed by our founder Tianqiao Chen 陈天桥, who defined its six capabilities. Before today, "AI that makes discoveries" is just a slogan. Three things published today change that: a definition of "discoverative intelligence", a rubric to tell sound investigation from lucky guesses, and a open call for both solvers and problems. WHAT TRACES MEASURES Not just the answer, but the path to the answer. Six capabilities that spell its name: T — Tools: selecting, calling and correctly interpreting external tools R — Repair: locating and correcting its own errors once feedback arrives A — Alternatives: laying out competing hypotheses and keeping or discarding them as evidence accumulates C — Coherence: holding state, constraints and logic intact across a long chain of work E — Evidence: grounding every conclusion in observation, data, experiment or citation S — Scope: stating the conditions under which a conclusion holds, and where it does not apply TRACES evaluates today whether the discovery process is rigorous and evidence-grounded, even when the final outcome is not yet known 🔍 WHAT IS PUBLISHED TODAY Today, in full: the technical report — the definitions, the rubric, the registry of problems — spanning biomedicine, clinical translation and frontier-model engineering.
