This summer, 12 of Europe's major rivers carried about 69 km³ less water than their long-term average, the largest shortfall since records began in 1992. That is equivalent to almost two years of water supplied for public use across the EU. Europe is warming about twice as fast as the global average, due to climate change. What does that mean for the continent's water supply, and what can be done about it? The latest edition of our newsletter looks at what happened this summer, what it meant on the ground and what EEA assessments say about the years ahead:

💶 🔥 Europe's climate change bill: how big is it, and how fast is it growing? This summer brought heatwaves, wildfires and drought across Europe, straining energy, agriculture and transport. The cost is already substantial and it has accelerated in the past 5 years. Find out from our newsletter how much climate change is costing us, and how much it will cost if global warming reaches 2°C, or 3°C. There is also good news: every euro invested in adaptation brings multiple benefits.

🌡️ As a heat dome settles over Europe this week — with temperatures forecast to exceed 40°C across Iberia and France, and reaching up to 10–15°C above seasonal averages in some areas — heatwaves are once again at the top of the public health agenda. This is Europe's second major heat event in weeks. The May heatwave already brought record-breaking temperatures across the continent, with Spain recording over 100 heat-related deaths. Heatwaves remain Europe's deadliest extreme weather event. In a timely new interview, EEA expert Aleksandra Kazmierczak explains what the latest data shows on heat and human health, and what cities and governments can do to protect people. The answer is not only mechanical cooling: nature is our best air conditioning. Trees, green areas, green roofs, and cool public spaces reduce temperatures, limit the urban heat island effect, and give people access to relief without each household running its own unit. Mitigation and adaptation must go hand in hand. While early warning systems and urban greening save lives now, cutting emissions remains essential to reducing the frequency and intensity of events like this one. Europe is taking action against the destruction of unsold clothes and shoes … a behaviour far from a circular economy! 👗 🧦 🔄 Last month, the EU adopted new measures to prevent the destruction of unsold apparel, clothing, accessories and footwear. The ban 🚫 on the destruction of unsold textiles under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) will be applied to larger companies starting from 19 July 2026. The EEA has contributed to this new policy, by reporting that 4–9% of all textile products put on the market in Europe are destroyed before even being used, with significant negative effects on the environment as well as the climate. We are happy to see the EU is taking action based on our data and knowledge! Interested in knowing more about what is behind the large amount of unsold and returned textiles being destroyed?
