The Eurasian Development Bank acts as a senior co-lender in the Bank of America-arranged $670 million club financing for the further development of Almaty International Airport, contributing $100 million. The financing brings together a group of international and local financial institutions, including Merrill Lynch International International, Societe Generale, The Turkic Investment Fund and Kazakhstan banks. As the largest #aviation hub in #CentralAsia and Kazakhstan’s leading airport by passenger and cargo traffic, #Almaty International Airport serves more than 32,000 passengers a day. Passenger traffic reached 12 million in 2025. The financing will support the airport’s capital investment programme, including: • modernisation of the domestic terminal; • airside #infrastructure improvements and aircraft de-icing facilities; • expansion of the cargo terminal; • improved connectivity between the international and domestic terminals; • upgrades to baggage handling, apron operations and parking facilities. This builds on the EDB’s previous support for the airport. In 2021, the EDB, DEG, EBRD and IFC - International Finance Corporation financed its expansion and modernisation, including the construction of the new international terminal, commissioned in 2024. The project increased the airport’s annual design capacity from 3 million to 14 million passengers. The new $670 million financing brings together multilateral development banks, international financial institutions and commercial lenders, demonstrating how different sources of capital can work together to support major infrastructure investment in #Kazakhstan. The financing has a final maturity in 2033.
