On Tuesday morning, the ERA-co team took to the WRLDCTY Connections Stage as part of the World Cities Summit in Singapore to facilitate one of the liveliest sessions of the three days. Moderated by Global Director Steven Cornwell, the debate centred on the impact of AI and robotics on cities. Steven opened by framing the premise: "As AI continues to augment and ultimately surpass human cognitive capability, the rise of the machine and robotics industry is transforming how we work, move, consume, and live — and this transformation will either strengthen our cities or hollow them out." Both the positive and negative teams, led by ERA-co leaders Hugo Lamb and alex baum respectively, invited the audience to engage with their arguments and consider the advantages, and implications, of cities influenced by rapidly advancing technologies. Spectator Amahl Hazelton at Moment Factory reflected on the debate, "This was one of the best conference sessions I have ever seen — truly engaging and well researched." Steven reflected on the role ERA-co played at this year's summit by saying, "At ERA-co, we believe progress requires debate, not consensus. As AI and robotics reshape humanity, we explored competing futures on a global stage to better understand the challenges — and opportunities — ahead." #ERAco #AdvancingHumanityThroughPlace #WRLDCTY2026 #Robotics #AI Jasmine Palardy Doug Jones PLA, ASLA, LEED AP Samantha Peart Andrea Curtis

And the cities we built around human labour are being asked what they're actually for. Next week, ERA-co hosts the 2026 WRLDCTY Debate in Singapore. The room will be full of people with very different opinions. What does the city become? We want your answer before we put it to the room, drop it in the comments below. To advance humanity through place, we must design beyond the individual. Human-Centred Design was a necessary corrective. But today’s cities demand something broader - an understanding of climate, infrastructure, economics and governance as integrated systems. In our latest “How We Work” article Paolo Testolini explores why the future of urban planning must evolve from human-centered to system-conscious design.
