Climate Week NYC is all done. Data centers were a big part of the conversations. The debate keeps landing on a false choice: build everything or build nothing. There's a third option that does things properly. We call it the Electron Accelerator. The policy mechanism balances environmental responsibility whilst protecting ratepayers' costs and well-being. We need a better route forward: - Our Good, Bad, and Ugly analysis tracks 21 major US data center projects. Eleven are bringing new clean power. The other 10 include plans for 30.8 gigawatts (GW) of new gas. That could mean around 70.6 million tons of CO2 a year, roughly Pennsylvania's entire power-sector emissions. - Our YouGov poll found most Americans expect data centers to push up their bills. Data centers backed by fossil fuels are twice as unpopular as those backed by renewables. - Policymakers are already moving. The Electron Accelerator underpins legislation in Illinois and is under discussion in Virginia and Colorado. It features in Senator Whitehouse's Clean Cloud Act. The Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC) Institute calls it a leading idea for sustainable AI. Watch Killian Daly and Alex Piper on why this matters. Then read the blog to see how it works. Both the proposal and our Good, Bad, and Ugly analysis are open for feedback. Tell us what's wrong, missing or can be improved. Blog, analysis, and polling in the comments. #ClimateWeekNYC #DataCenters

Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and EnergyTag are bringing together companies, experts, and leaders to unpack proposed updates to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Scope 2 rules — changes that would require companies to match clean electricity purchases to the time and location of their use to claim emissions reductions. Hear why climate-leadership companies are already adopting this approach, what they've learned implementing it, and why these reforms matter now more than ever for grid decarbonization. Panelists include: - Sen Sheldon Whitehouse - Yamide Dagnet (Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) - Chris Pennington (Iron Mountain) - Louise Fournon (ENGIE) - Rowen VonPlagenhoef (esVolta) - Rachel S. (Climate Group) - Pete Budden (Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) - Killian Daly (EnergyTag) Stick around after the Q&A for a networking happy hour — food and drinks on us #ClimateWeekNYC

The Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) just published 1,072 responses to its Scope 2 consultation — the biggest proposed shake-up in clean energy accounting in over a decade. Join the EnergyTag team for a 30-minute first look at what the results actually show. We'll walk through the key themes and trends emerging so far, and dig into what specific organizations did — and didn't — say. Speakers: Killian Daly, Executive Director Alex Piper, Head of US Policy & Markets Karl Koesser, GHGP Campaign Manager Ellie Rowlands, Communications Manager This is an initial, high-level pass — we'll be publishing deeper analysis over the coming weeks, and we want your input to help shape it. Stick around for live Q&A: tell us what you want to know, and it'll help shape our next round of analysis.

It’s *About Time* We’re excited to launch our latest tool: About Time - a living dashboard tracking the global momentum for hourly matching and around-the-clock clean power. The momentum for around-the-clock clean power is growing. What was once a theory is now becoming a global reality. The tool gives you real-world examples of contracts, case studies, and companies doing this right now. Why About Time? Because the mandate is dual: 1️⃣ It’s About Time we think about time: It's time we replace outdated annual averages with reality-based, transparent hourly accounting. 2️⃣ It’s About Time we take immediate action: It's time we fix broken carbon accounting systems and modernize grids to drive clean power around the clock, globally. How to use the tool: ➡️ Explore the map: Track and visualise the shift to round-the-clock clean energy - hourly matching policies, deals, suppliers, research and real-world implementation, all in one place. ➡️ Contribute data: Submit missing regulatory updates or new corporate procurement deals through our online form The momentum for round-the-clock clean power is growing. By 2035, almost 97% of China’s total exports could be subject to carbon border taxes. China’s current exposure to CBAM is modest. But it will rise a lot in the future. Currently, only 1.6% of China’s exports are exposed to CBAM. In December 2025, the EU announced plans to expand CBAM from 2028 to cover 180 downstream manufactured products. Manufactured goods currently account for 97% of China's exports to the EU. This means carbon border taxes could be applied on nearly all goods exported to the EU from Chinese exporters. The EU ETS carbon price averaged USD 84 per tonne in 2025. China's domestic carbon price sat at USD 10. That gap means domestic carbon trading alone won't close the compliance shortfall. Those exporters who can show low carbon production (including hourly green electricity use) will have a huge trade advantage. Read our latest report (linked in comments) to learn about these global trade changes. #CBAM #China #CleanPower

China's Green Electricity Certificate (GEC) trading volume grew 1,550 times between 2021 and 2025. Companies bought a record 930.5 TWh of these certificates in 2025. However, this massive supply saw prices plummet - the price of green certificates collapsed to nearly zero by the end of the year. Cheap certificates give power companies no financial reason to build clean energy where grids need it most. Standard certificates only track total monthly volume. They treat cheap midday solar power the same as expensive evening power. Hourly certificates can help solve this problem. By moving away from a volumetric model that views every renewable MWh as the same, hourly matching directly links clean-energy claims to real-time market dynamics. This approach aligns green power with the hourly cycles that already dictate price fluctuations, curtailment levels, and the overall worth of grid flexibility. Establishing this connection helps by: ⚡ Addressing solar-driven daily ramps by incentivizing storage and flexible loads to capture midday excess and shift it to evening peak periods. ⚡ Reducing the need for balancing interventions by better aligning price signals with real-time system conditions. ⚡ Facilitating the introduction of firm renewable products, such as solar-plus-storage, into the power market. ⚡ Enhancing transparency regarding grid investment requirements and existing bottlenecks. Our latest report explores the potential for round-the-clock clean power in China, check out link in the comments 👇 #China #CleanPower
