A milestone for South Africa’s power market ⚡📈 NERSA’s approval of the Market Operator licence for NTCSA, marks a big step toward a competitive electricity market. This decision form the first regulatory building block of SAWEM - setting expectations for transparent grid access and establishing the Electricity Market Advisory Forum to guide the transition. Several big steps still lie ahead, especially the formal signing of the Market Code, which will ultimately shape how competition functions in practice. As the market evolves, it’s essential for generators, large users and traders to understand the broader impact of SAWEM on pricing, participation and risk. We unpack these implications in our blog: https://lnkd.in/dARCXmzx #EnergyMarkets #PowerSector #SAWEM #NTCSA #NERSA

South Africa’s Carbon Market 2025: From Compliance to Opportunity 🌳 🌍 South Africa’s carbon market is moving into a new phase defined by both regulatory pressure and emerging commercial potential. With carbon prices increasing and global reporting standards becoming stricter, early movers will transition from reactive compliance to forward-looking carbon cost management and long-term value creation. Our latest blog unpacks this transition, exploring Phase 2 of the Carbon Tax, COAS’s growing role, rising CBAM pressure and the project streams shaping future carbon-credit supply as demand intensifies through 2035. A special thank you to Brundtland Consulting for the insightful podcast series that unpacks South Africa’s evolving carbon landscape. 🔗 Read the full blog: https://lnkd.in/dqCYVrsT #CarbonMarkets #CarbonTax #SouthAfrica #CBAM #EnergyTransition #Sustainability #EnergyGroup #Brundtland

The latest IRP draft sets a clear direction for South Africa’s energy future - outlining a fixed coal decommissioning schedule and reaffirming the country’s commitment to decarbonisation. This paves the way for significant renewable energy procurement in the coming years. We spoke to Nicholas van Doesburgh, Analyst at Meridian Economics (Pty)Ltd, to get his view on the future of South Africa's coal fleet. Here's what he had to say: "The debate around the role of South Africa’s coal fleet has been stuck in a false dichotomy: keep the plants running for longer or shut them down early. But this framing is based on old ideas about coal plants operating as constant ‘base load’ generators. If we start running coal plants more flexibly, they could actually help integrate more renewables into the grid and lower emissions by reducing coal burn." ⚡ Mixed Reactions to South Africa’s IRP 2025 South Africa’s long-awaited Integrated Resource Plan (IRP 2025) has been approved by Cabinet but not yet gazetted, despite being scheduled for 24 October 2025. This delay has added another layer of uncertainty to an already cautious market waiting for clarity on policy direction, investment signals and implementation timelines. The plan outlines an ambitious roadmap to 2039, including over 100 GW of new capacity: 34 GW wind, 25 GW solar, 16 GW gas-to-power, 8.5 GW storage and 5.2 GW nuclear at a projected R2.2 trillion investment cost. Over the past 15 years, South Africa’s renewable energy programme has procured less than 15 GW through successive bid windows under the REIPPPP. In contrast, IRP 2025 sets a far more ambitious pace - targeting 18 GW of new renewable capacity by 2033 and a total of 59 GW by 2039. This represents a near fourfold acceleration in procurement and project delivery requirements. ⚙️ Importantly, this ambitious roadmap is contingent on the expansion of South Africa’s constrained transmission grid, requiring approximately 14 000 km of new power lines by 2032 to connect planned renewable projects to the system. 💡 The IRP 2025 sends a strong signal for private investment, highlighting clear opportunities within the renewable sector to drive South Africa’s energy transition. #IRP2025 #EnergyTransition #PolicyUpdate #SouthAfrica #PowerSector #Renewables #Investment #Infrastructure

⚡Projects that empower One panel after the next, the Letsatsi PV project at Zondereinde Mine is accelerating towards COD. Once complete, the 97MW facility will deliver over 230GWh of renewable energy each year to Zondereinde Mine – providing operations with cleaner, cheaper and more reliable power. Projects like Letsatsi PV drive South Africa’s energy transition while creating meaningful opportunities for local workers, suppliers and service providers. At any time during peak construction, more than 400 people are contributing across various work streams – building local capacity and delivering lasting benefits to the surrounding communities. At Energy Group, we believe in the importance of large renewable energy projects for their economic, environmental and social impact - especially within a South African context. We thank the many hands bringing this project to life! #EnergyTransition #Sustainability #Mining #Renewables #SouthAfrica

🔑 Structuring Long-Term PPAs: Balancing Risk and Opportunity As South Africa’s energy landscape evolves, corporate Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) are becoming a cornerstone of strategy for mining houses, smelters, and manufacturers. Long-term PPAs not only unlock price stability and competitive financing, but also align businesses with their sustainability commitments. At the same time, navigating credit risk, grid access and regulatory changes requires careful structuring. In our latest article, we unpack how businesses can balance risk and reward when structuring long-term PPAs. 👉 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dTuweWFF #RenewableEnergy #PPA #EnergyTransition #Mining #Sustainability #CleanPower
