We asked Easan Drury, our Director of R&D, what gets him most excited about his work. His answer? “Every building teaches us something new. Whether it’s a school, office, or athletic facility — each one helps us refine our control strategies and make buildings more flexible, comfortable, and grid-ready.” As Easan puts it, the fun part is turning those “edge cases” into product improvements that help every customer. Stay tuned as we share more stories from the field.

Coast to Coast, Building by Building. Together with Avista, Eversource Energy, Puget Sound Energy, Piclo, the California Energy Commission, and EPRI, we continue to prove that buildings of all kinds can operate as responsive, reliable grid assets, reducing peak demand and cutting carbon. In California, we’ll be collaborating with the California Energy Commission and EPRI to advance a model for how schools can function as flexible grid resources. In Washington, with Avista, we equipped dozens of residential and commercial buildings — along with DERs — helping demonstrate how flexibility can reduce emissions, lower bills, and improve grid resilience. In Connecticut, we partnered with Eversource to optimize commercial buildings, from athletic megaplexes to public schools, delivering meaningful load reductions without disrupting operations or comfort. We’re showing what’s possible and we’re scaling it with more partners, more buildings, and more impact. #VirtualPowerPlants #DemandFlexibility #GridInteractiveBuildings #Decarbonization

New in Utility Dive! We’re sharing six lessons for surfacing the significant untapped flexibility in commercial buildings and turning it into capacity utilities can count on. Two lessons stand out: the economics have to work for utilities and building owners, and the key is to standardize the data, not the buildings or their hardware. Jesse Rebello and Jesse Sycuro, PE, CCP share these and four more lessons for unlocking hidden capacity in commercial buildings and doing it at scale. Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/ghcQY86T

We made an office building disappear from the grid for nearly three hours, and nobody inside noticed. On a single day earlier this month, as part of Avista's program, the Scott Morris Center shed 95 kW and held it through the hottest part of the afternoon. The building was built for this. It has thermal storage, batteries, HVAC systems, and a large PV array that are designed to work together. In this event, all the systems came together under Edo's coordination. Here’s what happened: 1. The space was pre-cooled ahead of the event so that the building could coast through the afternoon on comfort banked in advance. 2. The thermal storage were charged overnight and the batteries were charged from excess solar PV generation so they were full and ready the moment the window opened. 3. We discharged them together during the event in coordination with facility and Avista staff. Both released what they had banked, and the building's load dropped to almost nothing. A building has dozens of systems, each with its own flexibility, timing, and cost to tap. Bring them together at the right moment and the whole building becomes a single grid resource. #DemandFlexibility #VirtualPowerPlants #GridResilience #ConnectedCommunities

Automation, portfolio diversity, and better building data are helping utilities move from planning to dispatchable action.
