Can AI expand without putting the planet’s resources under pressure? As the scale of AI’s water consumption becomes increasingly clear, many data centres are facing community pushback due to fears over water stress. Semiconductor value chains are also affected by water risks including floods and shortages, while chips and AI infrastructure are vulnerable to disruption due to reliance on critical minerals. While closed-loop technologies are thought to be the best way to tackle water-related risks, they require more energy and hyperscalers are increasingly turning to fossil fuels to meet demand. Set against this backdrop, Responsible Investment Specialist, Gerrit Dubois, highlights that while AI is a compelling structural investment theme, environmental constraints are crucial to the long-term investment analysis as the effective management of resource risks becomes ever more important.
