Luxury talks endlessly about clienteling, private appointments and “the experience”. Yet in many boutiques, the training is still about the object, not the person in front of it. Hospitality has worked that muscle for decades: anticipating, reading the room, turning a transaction into a relationship. The reverse is true too. Hospitality can learn from luxury how to build a brand people want to belong to, and a career path to match. 76% of the alumni we surveyed say their employer has enhanced their profile. Only 55% see a clear path up. That’s what we explored in the Luxury & Hospitality Career Index, which my DLG (Digital Luxury Group) colleague Dominic Weir developped with Anouck Weiss, Christophe Julliard, and the Glion Institute of Higher Education and Les Roches teams. The talent already moves between the two industries. But when we asked alumni where they most want to work, 65% of mentions went to hotel groups. Luxury houses got 8%. Are luxury maisons ready to hire the people who already live by the highest hospitality standards? Right now, maisons are barely on their radar.

Walk into a flagship on Avenue Montaigne or Bond Street today and the first person to greet you may not be a sales associate. They may be a host. The choice of word is deliberate, and it tells you where luxury is looking for its next generation of talent. What it does not tell you is how that talent is meant to get there.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝘂𝘅𝘂𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗣𝗼𝗱𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝟰 – 𝗘𝗽𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝟯 𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 🔥 José Gaztelu, CEO of Chrono24, joins Robin Swithinbank and I to unpack why the secondary market has become the place where watches are discovered, compared, bought and sold, and why brands are watching it more closely than ever. “𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡.” For José, resale prices have become a health check that brands follow daily. But he believes the bigger opportunity is still untapped: reading secondary market data to understand where demand is heading, down to which archive pieces deserve a reedition. In this episode, we also cover: → How Chrono24 builds trust at scale, from dealer vetting to escrow and certification → Brand certified pre-owned programmes: threat or expansion of the market? → Will AI agents buy our next watch, and can AI become a tastemaker? → Why José sees no cap on where the secondary market can go 🎧 Available now on all major podcast platforms (link in comment) In partnership with Chrono24 Produced by Juliet Fallowfield at Fallow, Field & Mason

🎙️ NEW EPISODE While the primary market continues its search for growth, secondary market sellers are finding buyers. In this new episode of The Luxury Society Podcast, David Sadigh and I speak to José Gaztelu, CEO of Chrono24, the world’s leading online watch marketplace. We cover a lot of ground, including value perception, value retention and how brands are increasingly looking to the secondary market to define product strategy. Where pre-owned was once a market segment luxury companies viewed with disdain, now they have to take it seriously. As BREITLING CEO Jean-Marc Pontroue said in our previous episode, a brand’s greatest threat is often itself. Listen to the full episode using the links below.
