In a recent Solutionology Stories Newsletter, Carl and Brian Douglass from DI Labs shared six lessons for success in medical device innovation. We're featuring the fifth one here: LESSON 5: GET BIOCOMPATIBILITY WITHOUT THE WAIT Historically, achieving biocompatibility and surface finishes suitable for clinical use meant waiting for injection molding. That wait no longer exists. Today’s digital manufacturing materials and finishes deliver sealed, skin-safe, and aesthetically refined components much earlier in development. The advantage? You can use the same materials from development through launch, eliminating costly process changes and shaving weeks or months off timelines. "We’re able to do components where sealed finishes and tight tolerances are critical to success." — Carl Douglass, Solutionology Stories Episode 11 ___________________ Read the full "Medical Device Innovation: 6 Lessons for Success" in our Solutionology Stories Newsletter: https://lnkd.in/g4Jzhiha Connect with Carl Douglass, P.E., and Brian Douglass at MD&M Midwest in Minneapolis on October 21-22 and check out our Technical Session "Scaling Additive Manufacturing for Regulated Medical Devices" here: https://lnkd.in/geNnyVnY #medtech #medicaldevice #medicaldevicedevelopment hashtag #productdevelopment #productinnovation #digitalmanufacturing #additivemanufacturing #manufacturing #engineering

In a recent Solutionology Stories Newsletter, Carl and Brian Douglass from DI Labs shared six lessons for success in medical device innovation. We're featuring the third one here: LESSON 3: EMBED TRACEABILITY FROM THE START Documentation for regulatory compliance cannot be bolted on at the end. It must start with the very first part. DI Labs integrates traceability early, capturing build data, inspection results, and version history for every iteration. By the time you reach validation, the discipline and data structure for compliance are already built in, removing stress from what is often a high-stakes checkpoint. "Every build, every change - documented. That way we can prove what we did and why, anytime we’re asked." — Carl Douglass, Solutionology Stories Episode 25 ___________________ Read the full "Medical Device Innovation: 6 Lessons for Success" in our Solutionology Stories Newsletter: https://lnkd.in/g4Jzhiha Connect with Carl Douglass, P.E., and Brian Douglass at MD&M Midwest in Minneapolis on October 21-22 and check out our Technical Session "Scaling Additive Manufacturing for Regulated Medical Devices" here: https://lnkd.in/geNnyVnY #medtech #medicaldevice #medicaldevicedevelopment #productdevelopment #productinnovation #digitalmanufacturing #additivemanufacturing #manufacturing #engineering

In a recent Solutionology Stories Newsletter, Carl and Brian Douglass from DI Labs shared six lessons for success in medical device innovation. We're featuring the second one here: LESSON 2: ACCELERATE DEVELOPMENT WITH SHORT-RUN PRODUCTION Even when prototypes are proven, traditional methods can become a bottleneck for small-batch production for trials or pilots. Traditional methods are slow and inflexible. Digital manufacturing removes that barrier by enabling highly responsive, short-run builds. "We can run five different design variants in the same build, then inspect and ship them within days." — Brian Douglass, Solutionology Stories, Episode 29 This approach isn’t just about making parts faster—it’s about keeping the whole program in sync. Instead of rushing into the next order, development teams can pause to analyze data from clinical studies, adjust designs, and plan the next build with intention. That way, analysis, development, and production planning move together guided by clinical feedback and market goals. In our Solutionology Stories Podcast, Carl and Brian Douglass from DI Labs have shared six lessons for success in medical device innovation. LESSON 1: POSTPONE TOOLING TO MAXIMIZE FLEXIBILITY Too many teams commit to tooling before their design is proven. Once locked in, options for change shrink and costs rise. Digital manufacturing allows production-intent prototypes that look, feel, and perform like final parts but can still be adjusted quickly. Holding off on tooling until after testing and feedback allows you to preserve agility and the ability to adapt based on usability studies, test data, or unforeseen challenges without slowing the program. "We can make production-intent parts without waiting for tooling, so testing, feedback, and design updates happen in real time." - Carl Douglass, Solutionology Stories Podcast, Episode 11 Read "6 Lessons for Success" in our Solutionology Stories Newsletter: https://lnkd.in/g4Jzhiha Connect with Carl Douglass, P.E. and Brian Douglass at MD&M Midwest in Minneapolis on October 21-22 and check out our Technical Session "Scaling Additive Manufacturing for Regulated Medical Devices" here: https://lnkd.in/geNnyVnY
