We launched our first flexibility program with a flat monthly fee. 💸 It made sense on paper. It was simple to explain and simple to launch. Customers signed up. Then we watched what actually happened. 🤔 The system would discharge a customer's battery on a Tuesday evening. They'd come home, see it empty, and the monthly payment sitting in their contract felt abstract by comparison. They didn't feel the value. And slowly, some of them just opted out of flexibility altogether. 📉 The fee wasn't wrong. It was disconnected from the thing it was supposed to reward. So we changed the model. Pay per activation, not per month. Three activation types, three reward logics: 👆 Activation Up (discharging to grid) — the reward should fully cover what it costs the customer to replace that energy later. This is where trust is won or lost. 👇 Activation Down (charging from grid) — charging at a meaningful discount to retail. Cheap energy delivered straight to the battery. 🙅♂️ Curtailment (stopping solar overflow) — the customer should be paid roughly double their feed-in tariff. The energy never reaches the grid, so the reward has to be visibly better than what they'd have earned by exporting it. And every activation became visible in the app. What type, when, how much earned. That transparency is what turned a utility service into a product people actually trust. 💛 We now run this across thousands of households with retention of 96%. Photo by Lukas Neasi

A few weeks ago, imbalance prices spiked for 15 minutes. Most portfolios didn't react. Ours did. We shifted residential flexibility across our partners' assets in real time and saved €40,000 in a quarter of an hour. 💸 This is what active portfolio control looks like when the market surprises you. If you're a utility and you're not sure what that same window cost you, let's talk.

Romania's grid imbalance costs around 5 billion lei a year. That number surprised me when I first heard it. It's the cost of solar generation nobody is managing, prosumers feeding into the grid uncontrolled, and utilities absorbing the difference. And here's what makes it interesting. A Romanian household with solar, a battery and an EV represents around €180 per month in flexibility value. If you're actively managing those assets, that flows through your portfolio. If you're not, it's just money left on the table. What I find unique about Romania is that the model works even without batteries. Solar-only households can already generate meaningful market value through controlled curtailment. That's rare in Europe. I'm heading to Bucharest soon and I'd love to connect with people thinking about this. No agenda, just a coffee and an honest conversation about what residential flexibility looks like in practice and whether it makes sense for your portfolio. If that sounds interesting, send me a message.

On May 1st, Day-Ahead prices in Germany hit –€0.50/kWh. On the markets where we operate, we saw the same pattern play out in real time. ⚠️ Some households reached their entire monthly flexibility figure in a single day. For utilities on fixed-price contracts, the same day meant losses of tens of euros per customer. This is not an edge case. It's becoming the new normal. Residential flexibility is generating real revenue today. A typical household with solar, a home battery, and an EV can earn: 🇩🇪 €40/month in Germany 🇵🇱 €45/month in Poland 🇨🇿 €52/month in Czech Republic 🇦🇹 €71/month in Austria From just two markets, Day-Ahead optimization and imbalance management. No complicated instruments required. At Delta Green, I work with established utilities as a Flexibility-as-a-Service technology layer. E.ON is one reference across multiple European markets. If you're managing a residential portfolio, the value is already in your customer base. Happy to dig into the numbers, feel free to reach out.

"Trade yourself out of trouble." This single sentence from the latest Montel News analysis sums up the reality for European energy retailers in 2025. 📈 With activation prices hitting €16,500 in Austria, relying on the balancing market is no longer a safety net. So, what do you trade with? Look at your portfolio. You are sitting on gigawatts of unused capacity. Thousands of customer EVs, batteries, and heat pumps are waiting to be activated. 💡 The old model was to supply power. The new model is to orchestrate it. At Delta Green we provide the SaaS to turn these passive assets into a flexible fleet. 👉 https://deltagreen.energy/
