𝗜𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿, 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗸𝗶𝗱𝘀’ 𝗯𝗶𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲. Yet none of the major bike brands are positioned to capture that demand. Parents don’t just search for “kids’ bike.” They search for the bike that fits their child: “Bike for a 5-year-old” “Girls’ 20-inch bike” “Bike for a 3-year-old” 𝗪𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝟭,𝟭𝟱𝟵 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲, representing 191,000 searches every month, before the December peak even begins. Who appears on page one? Amazon. Walmart. Reddit. Resellers, Review sites. Specialized Bicycle Components, Giant Bicycle, Cannondale, Canyon and Marin Bikes all sell kids’ bikes. Yet none of them has a page ranking for these high-intent searches. The products exist. The pages parents are searching for don’t. So those customers end up buying through Amazon or Walmart instead. 𝗡𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝟲 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿, Americans search a mattress or a pillow for something that hurts. 𝟵𝟭% 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗮 𝘀𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱. Today someone types "mattress for back pain" and lands on Forbes, or Amazon. The first brand is #7. Picture the other version. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗲. It explains what a bad back needs, and shows the one you make for it. Same for neck pain. Snoring. Pregnancy. Hot sleepers. +130 needs. Dog food brands are losing the “health” category, all of them. Surprising, right? Let's see why Health needs should be the one place a dog food brand can't lose. A dog with a sensitive stomach or a skin allergy doesn't need an opinion, it needs a specific, formulated product. That's exactly what dog food companies make. So we checked: 𝟰𝟴𝟵,𝟵𝟱𝟬 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 across 37 health conditions. Makers win only one. (hi Nestlé Purina North America 🙂) Who owns the rest: Dog food for 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗵, the biggest: Reddit, a vet hospital, Reddit, another vet clinic, then Purina at #5. Dog food for 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 - PetMD. - Don't sell food. Dog food for 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 - Chewy. And 𝟯𝟰 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲… 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲: Purina's sensitive-skin page ranks #1 because it answers the question, instead of just selling. This buyer isn't only buying food. He wants assurance it'll help his dog, an understanding of why the problem happens, and what else he can do about it. Those intents ride along with the purchase, whether or not the brand answers them. Do that across these conditions, you're cashing in on nearly half a million searches a month. This is one finding out of dozens in the dog food market, where you're present but never chosen, need by need. We are sharing a sample of this report over a 15-minute demo showing your brand. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 “𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱” and we'll pick it up

Here's something we keep running into, and it says more about us than about search. When people search by gender, women search for women-specific products far more than men search for men-specific ones. Nearly twice as often. And we see it in every market we map, from skis to bikes to beyond. My read on why: men tend to assume anything generic is for them. Women often assume it isn't, so they search specifically to make sure. "Chauvinism", backed by data. Search is just a mirror to human behavior. But here's where it stops being a fun observation and starts costing money. Brands carry the same blind spot. They build a "unisex" product, label it unisex, and never tell the woman looking at it that yes, this is for her too. So she keeps searching. And the brand that actually said it out loud gets the customer. Multiply that across every category, and it's tens of thousands of buyers walking past products that were right for them, because nobody confirmed it. Agree with the explanation, or do you see another reason behind it? One of several gaps we keep spotting. Happy to share the others if you're curious, just say the word.

Industry leaders are losing searches. To smaller brands. To Reddit. To Amazon. We mapped 77 brands, 92,345 queries, and 15.8 million monthly searches in the US bicycle market. And the deeper we dig, the more the same pattern shows up. Trek (#1 brand) loses 100% of internal product comparison queries to Reddit. Giant loses 63K brand searches a month to Amazon, who doesn't sell Giant. Canyon outranks Specialized in mountain, road, and gravel with 4.4% market share. Liv beats parent Giant on 1/45th the branded volume. 64% of gendered searches are women. Average brand rank? #14. The winners didn't win on brand strength. They won on category depth and information architecture mapped to specific user needs, the way users express them in search and in LLMs. Kevin Indig analyzed 3.7M AI citations. 91% appear in only one engine. Brand mentions don't travel. Useful pages do. GEO outreach is link building 2.0. It won't fix what these brands are losing. The real fix is harder. Map what users actually ask, build the architecture that answers them. We've built the full competitive map for every major bicycle brand. Comment "bikes" below and I'll send you the sample report. The first 10 commenters get a free Search Intelligence call on their own brand. Giant Bicycle, Specialized Bicycle Components, Trek Bicycle, Schwinn GmbH, Cannondale Europe, Canyon Bicycles US, Santa Cruz Bicycles, woom, Bianchi Bicycles, Diamondback Firearms Bicycles, Haro Bikes, RossBicycles USA LTD, Mongoose Bicycles, Norco Bikes, Shimano, Kona Bicycle Company, Marin Bikes, GT Bicycles, Tianjin Fuji-Ta Bicycle Manufacturer Co.,Ltd., ORBEA, Huffy Corporation, SRAM, Argon 18, Bianchi Bicycles, Fox Factory, CONOR BIKES

Last week, we completed the first Search Intelligence report for the entire Ski and snowboard gear industry. A category that gets 4.47 million searches/month, and most ski and snowboard brands still see one keyword, one page, one opportunity. This week, we'll sample the analysis of 92,666 "ski and snowboard" queries, with 376 distinct user need combinations. The ski and snowboard category alone spans dozens of distinct user needs: riding style and terrain, product type, gender-specific fit, price constraints, skill level, sizes & fits, and more. (riding styles & terrain breakdown with search volumes in the image) But here's what changes everything: these needs combine into demand patterns. Now add AI search. Users don't type keywords, they prompt with precision, for example: "𝘞𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯'𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘭𝘭-𝘮𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘴𝘬𝘪 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 $800". 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝟱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗿𝘆: Gender ("𝘸𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯'𝘴") Skill level ("𝘣𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘳") Riding style ("𝘢𝘭𝘭-𝘮𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯") Product type ("𝘴𝘬𝘪") Price ceiling ("𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 $800") That's not a search. That's a purchase decision waiting for an answer on your website. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲: more intent signals = more specific needs = higher conversion probability. That's the map. Now here's the money: We found 12,914 queries with 3+ combined needs, each combined need represents a specific demand in your market. 476,800 searches/month. 𝗔𝘁 𝟭% 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 $𝟱𝟬𝟬 𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝘁: 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝗹𝘆 $𝟮𝟴.𝟲𝗠/𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿. The exact math depends on your AOV and conversion rates, but the gap is real, and it's quantifiable. 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗦𝗘𝗢 & 𝗚𝗘𝗢 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗱, 𝗻𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘀. Want me to send you the ski and snowboard search intelligence sample report? Comment "Ski" on this post and I'll share it with you.
