The People's Republic of China controls 90% of the active ingredients for all #antibiotics. 🚨 For decades, Europe has drifted into a precarious dependency by relying on a single, highly vulnerable supply chain. Our healthcare systems are now dependent on Chinese upstream inputs. ➡️ This makes the European antibiotic supply vulnerable to a factory shutdown, a supply chain delay, or a geopolitical dispute. Read our latest #Report by Andrew Rechenberg, in collaboration with the Coalition for a Prosperous America, to find out the true extent of these systemic vulnerabilities and the policy steps required to rebuild our resilience. The European supply of essential #antibiotics faces a severe, systemic chokepoint 👇 Approximately 90% of the active pharmaceutical ingredients used in #antibiotics come from just one country: the People’s Republic of China. ➡️ This upstream dependence means a localised factory issue, supply chain disruption, or geopolitical dispute could halt global production and quickly lead to severe medical shortages. A coordinated, transatlantic approach is urgently needed to rebuild our manufacturing base and restore supply chain resilience. Andrew Rechenberg, author of our latest #Report in collaboration with the Coalition for a Prosperous America, unpacks this supply chain fragility. 🎬

In 2016, an explosion at a single Chinese factory wiped out the global supply of a critical penicillin-class antibiotic. This wasn't an anomaly, but a preview of our supply chain fragility. Today, the US and Europe are dependent on the People's Republic of China (PRC) for access to penicillin, the most widely used antibiotic in the world. 🏭 Just 7 factories worldwide produce the active ingredient used in penicillin 🚨 5 of those are in the PRC, accounting for 90% of global capacity 📆 The US hasn't manufactured the raw ingredients since 2004 1️⃣ 🇪🇺 Europe has only one producer left #Antibiotics are an essential part of our national resilience. Our latest #Report, in collaboration with the Coalition for a Prosperous America, outlines how we can rebuild this critical capability using a transatlantic approach. 📖 Read the full Report by Andrew Rechenberg now
