For many heat set web offset printers, reel-fed production and automatic reel changing have been standard practice for years. So when investing in a new high-speed sheet-fed offset press line, why accept production stops for manual reel changes? In Moderna Printing's initial sheet-fed configuration with a reel sheeter, nearly 50 weekly reel changes resulted in constant production interruptions, with each stop taking almost 15 minutes. By introducing Contiweb non-stop unwinding technology, production now continues during reel changes, helping Moderna Printing regain almost one full production shift per week. In Moderna Printing's initial setup, they operated their sheet-fed offset press with a reel sheeter and single unwinder, meaning production had to stop for every reel change. Following the investment in a new high-speed Heidelberg Speedmaster XL106 with CutStar reel sheeter, Moderna Printing introduced the Contiweb CB-N Non-Stop Unwinder to enable continuous production. Previously, Moderna Printing performed around 50 reel changes per week, with each stop taking nearly 15 minutes. By eliminating these interruptions, they regained almost one full production shift per week. The boundaries between heatset web offset and sheetfed production are starting to shift.
