WHY GREEN STEEL? | Where industry is concerned, the word "sustainability" has perhaps become THE buzzword of the past decade and the steel-manufacturing industry is not escaping scrutiny either. The shift to the production of more environmentally-friendly products is being driven by regulatory pressures, consumer demand and international commitments to reduce carbon emissions and, globally, the sector has taken heed of the importance of mitigating its impact. Coega Steels director Amit Saini says steelmaking by way of recycling scrap is the foremost method of producing a cleaner product: https://lnkd.in/d5YBB2Xq #GreenSteel

CLEAN & GREEN | India, followed closely by the US and many European countries, is the leading green-steel producer globally. In South Africa, mini-mills like Coega Steels are similarly embracing the need for environmentally-friendly practices. Equally importantly, the local industry is pushing to become the continental pacesetter in this regard. Clean steel commands a premium in global markets, which highlights the importance of eking out a competitive advantage. This is how the sector drives sustainable manufacturing: https://lnkd.in/d5YBB2Xq #GreenSteel

DID YOU KNOW? | South Africa’s traditional coal-fired blast furnaces produced 2.59-million tonnes of steel in 2024 while the so-called mini-mills, where steel is made from scrap metal, yielded approximately 2.11-million in the same 12-month period. While the outputs were similar, the latter emitted roughly a quarter of the carbon. Coega Steels co-director Amit Saini explains: https://lnkd.in/d5YBB2Xq #GreenSteel

One of our directors, Amit Saini, recently shared his perspective on the future of South Africa’s steel industry in Business Day. He highlighted why cleaner, more sustainable manufacturing is crucial and how mini-mills, such as Coega Steels, are leading the way. What is your take on the shift to so-called "green steel"? CIRCLE THE WAGONS | Nearly 50 countries have already restricted scrap exports to retain as much of this critical resource as possible. Scrap is crucial to the decarbonisation of the steel industry, which currently contributes some eight per cent of total global CO² emissions. It is widely accepted that, globally, the material will account for 50 per cent of the iron content in steel by 2030. That's a whopping 35 per cent up from where we are today. The problem is that scrap stocks are not infinite. As international demand rises, less is available "in-house", driving up prices and putting those countries without restrictions under huge pressure. No wonder scrap is sometimes referred to as the "new gold". South Africa's price preference system, or PPS, has been designed to curtail the exodus of domestic scrap. The policy requires dealers to offer their product to local steelmakers at a discount before exporting. Should the PPS be done away with, it will deal a devastating blow to the nation's scrap supplies and the industry's efforts to lower toxic emissions. OPINION | South Africa is perfectly placed to be Africa’s green-steel hub, given its strategic position in regional and global markets. The key to unlocking SA’s full potential lies in driving growth and maximising local potential. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/duMF8iaa
