Last week, Codibly had the pleasure of exhibiting at intercharge network conference in Berlin hosted by Hubject. Two and half days in Tempelhof Airport speaking with existing and potential customers on how we can support and collaborate with them to enhance their offering to customers across Europe through the custom software solutions we provide. Conversations varied from ⚡ CPO's & Utilities wanting their own CPMS and eMSP, under their full control at a much-reduced cost that can be customised in a number of weeks ✅ Open ADR will become the standard communication layer for demand response for Europe 👏 Many CPO's are now enhancing their offering and not looking at just the charger side, but how they can complement other distributed energy resources on site to have a robust solution for large fleets and HGV charging. 📋 Many businesses are wanting to move to OCPP 2.1 as the standard. This is both for the end customers and on the CPO side. 🤝 Typically at these events, it's always the industry talking to itself, this year there was noticeably a lot more end users at the show, fleet providers, OEM's, retail etc. As event season picks back up and the air miles start to grow, it'll be interesting to see how these and other trends progress and we are already looking forward to returning to Tempelhof next year.

Europe can't become an electrostate by building more grid. We have to coordinate millions of devices it will never own: the heat pumps, EVs, and batteries sitting behind every customer meter, made to act as one, at continental scale, in real time. None of that works unless your battery, your car, and your heat pump can take a signal from the grid and act on it, automatically, without you lifting a finger. Getting that connection to work reliably, across millions of homes and dozens of countries -> is a big task. On July 9, OpenADR Alliance webinar takes the problem head on. Where does OpenADR 3 fit, and how tightly can it align with IEC CIM and the standards already in the field? Presentations, then a panel, with: Tim M., UK Power Networks Laurent Schmitt, dcbel Nicholas Claaszen, ElaadNL Rolf Bienert, OpenADR Alliance I'm moderating, on behalf of member company Codibly.

We have the technology, -> we don't have the interoperability (yet). We keep treating the energy transition like a hardware problem, more chargers, more batteries, more flexibility markets, more grid. OEM backends speak #OCPP and #ISO15118. Grid operators speak CIM, IEC 61850, #OpenADR, #IEEE_2030_5. Between them sits a translation layer nobody owns — and that's exactly where V2G and grid flexibility stall. Where does this actually end: convergence, or a permanent tax on every integration?

At Codibly, we recently published a whitepaper exploring how CPOs can shape their software strategy in a market that is becoming increasingly competitive and, ultimately, more consolidated. If you're operating a public charging network in Europe today, the below are likely two increasingly growing challenges ⚡ Margins on charging are tightening as more than a thousand operators compete for market share, with profitability increasingly under pressure. ⚡ At the same time, flexibility markets, smart charging, and grid services are moving from discussion and consultation into real commercial opportunities. As the market matures, we believe the winners won't necessarily be the networks with the most chargers, but those that can generate more value from the chargers they already have. Higher reliability. Smarter energy management. Demand response. Grid-facing flexibility. These are becoming critical differentiators. Worth a read for anyone shaping a 2026 software roadmap. https://lnkd.in/emTsW4AV

The internet works because of the decision made by ARPANET in 1983: standardise the base communication layer (TCP/IP), and let everything else work on top of it. Nobody is trying to redesign basic packet routing in 2026. That is how the multi trillion-dollar globalized economy was created. Distributed energy is approaching the same inflection point. California already showed what that decision looks like. #IEEE_2030_5 was mandated for energy interconnection under Rule 21, and the result, is roughly 30% more grid headroom on the existing infrastructure through curtailable inverters alone. One protocol, decided early, enforced consistently. The EU is the inverse situation. 27 retail markets, and DSOs that each define flexibility procurement on their own terms. The answer is not to wait for consensus. It is to standardise the integration layer that absorbs the differences, and let the local market logic stay local. Spencer Borison and I wrote up what that looks like across both contexts, with the six pillars Odin Sørensen and William M. framed, the ENGIE and ev.energy case studies, and where the engineering work in consumer flex has moved (which is no longer device-by-device integration).

What will it actually take to turn a fleet of connected EVs, chargers, and home batteries into reliable grid flexibility? I'm joining Spencer Borison and the Enode team (Odin Sørensen and William M. for a live webinar where we dig into integration models, the operational realities utilities don't talk about enough, and how protocol strategy connects to real program design. If you're in demand response, smart charging, or DER aggregation, worth an hour of your time. https://lnkd.in/eZEJKFCY
