When I first set out to build the Circular Computing brand and proposition, plenty of people in the industry questioned the logic. Why on earth would any company invest millions in a dedicated facility to remanufacture laptops when the business world was quite happy buying brand new? But today, no one is questioning it, as everything has changed. The price of 'brand new' has skyrocketed as AI data centres are devouring global memory production and chipmakers are shifting capacity away from standard PCs. The result is what many are calling "RAMageddon": sharp price increases, component supply chain bottlenecks and severe pressure on IT budgets. Alongside this, the world has got wise to the sustainability equation for 'new' and we innovated to build a product that is "equal to or better than new". It really is the perfect storm for increased adoption of non-new laptops. As the wider market grapples with increased lead times and rising costs, that commitment to long-term resilience means we are able to support organisations with high-spec, reliable laptops at scale.

Five years ago, the world scrambled for any laptops available to keep the lights on and allow people to work from home. Now, those same machines are going through a replacement process, just as we are standing at the edge of a massive IT supply chain crisis. The industry is telling you that you have no choice but to pay the premium. Manufacturers are hiking prices due to RAM and SSD increases, and lead times are growing. They want you to believe "new" is the only way to stay resilient. I believe that is a lie. It is a logic built on waste – both financially and physically. At Circular Computing, we provide enterprise-grade HP, Dell, and Lenovo laptops at scale. We call it "The New New®." This isn’t "second-hand" tech. It is remanufactured to perform like new, but costs up to 40% less and saves CO2, water and minerals with every unit. We only rent this planet from the next generation and buying new isn’t a badge of honour - but being resourceful to get through a crisis is.

We are vocal that the IT industry has a responsibility to reduce its environmental footprint - but we want to go beyond and create positive social impact alongside environmental progress. That approach became a new commitment: for every laptop sold, we provide a family with clean water for a week. We do this through our partnership with charity: water. Our first project in Gbamusu, Sierra Leone, was the beginning. Now, our second project in Alac, Uganda, is complete, providing another 372 people with access to a reliable source of safe drinking water. Today, that vision now impacts 592 people across two communities, every single day. And none of this would happen without the customers who choose Circular Computing. So thank you for helping us to go beyond. Visit our website to learn more about these projects: https://lnkd.in/d88g8w24 #CircularComputing #charitywater #CleanWater #SustainableIT #SocialImpact

Adopting a circular IT strategy delivers a definitive "triple win" for modern organisations, seamlessly uniting environmental accountability, fiscal responsibility and operational excellence. First, the climate win is substantial. Our remanufactured laptops produce just 6.34% of the carbon emissions of equivalent new laptops. Second, the financial win challenges the notion that sustainability carries a premium. Bypassing raw material extraction reduces procurement costs by up to 40%. Finally, the quality win guarantees performance. Our remanufactured laptops are certified 'equal to or better than new', proving commercial efficiency requires no compromise. Transform your laptop procurement into a strategic advantage. The world is generating e-waste five times faster than documented recycling can handle. Simply put: Recycling cannot keep up with e-waste. This International E-Waste Day, we decided to revisit our podcast series, Sustainable IT: In Conversation, and let the industry leaders and experts Elsa Nightingale, Alexander Thiele, Stefan Nilsson, John Gladstone, Mat Jordan, Alastair Borissow and Sophia Haywood-Atkinson deal with the challenging questions every IT leader should be facing. The consensus is clear: Recycling recovers materials. Reuse prevents crisis and improves the whole laptop sustainability equation. To truly solve the crisis, we must shift our mindset from a linear, disposable culture to an active circular economy. By choosing our certified remanufactured laptops, organisations can reduce their environmental footprint and ensure that technology doesn’t cost the Earth. Close the loop. Choose sustainability. One of Greening Government Commitments ICT Annual Report's ambitions is to report an annual percentage improvement in the procurement of remanufactured and refurbished ICT, helping to promote multiple device lifecycles. For 2024-25, that ambition is marked "at risk." Not because departments don't recognise the opportunity. In fact, the report states that many departments already see the potential for cost savings and significant reductions in embodied carbon through second-life devices. The challenge is measurement. Without an accurate way to measure annual improvements in second-life ICT procurement, demonstrating progress becomes difficult. This is exactly where Circular Computing believes the conversation should move next. As circular procurement becomes more widely adopted, organisations should begin measuring not only what they buy, but the outcomes they create. Metrics such as the proportion of second-life devices, device lifespans, embodied carbon, reuse and remanufacturing rates, residual asset value and end-of-life outcomes can provide a far more meaningful picture of progress. Because circular procurement isn't just about making better purchasing decisions. It's about measuring the value those decisions create. #CircularComputing #SustainableIT #CircularProcurement #PublicSector #ITProcurement #CircularEconomy #UKGovernment
