Have you seen a blockchain analytics tool advertise and promote how they use machine learning as a method for labeling wallets on the blockchain? Probably yes. You're buying a tool to give you answers. Instead, such tools only leave you with more questions, and here’s why: ML works brilliantly when you have massive amounts of known, factual data. Netflix knows every show you've watched, every partial show, every rewatch. And not just for you, also everyone that resembles you. With that much ground truth, predictions about what you'll watch next can be remarkably good. Blockchain is the opposite. The data is pseudonymous by design. You're mostly working with unknowns. And yet some providers run the same machine learning playbooks as Netflix ignoring that the ground truth data set is very different and still call it intelligence. No compliance officer would off-board a customer based on a prediction. No prosecutor would bring a case on a guess — even a qualified one. Because a guess is still a guess. With ML, everything is a guess. On pseudonymous blockchain data, it's not just a guess – it's a scientifically unqualified guess built on bad statistics and sold as fact. And when your labels can't survive scrutiny, you don’t want scrutiny! Maybe that’s why a blockchain analytics provider threatened to sue Dutch researchers to prevent them from publishing results on the quality of their tool. At Chainalysis, we do the opposite. We don't block researchers. Every label we ship must withstand the toughest questions. That's what our customers deserve. So remember, relying on machine learning as a method for blockchain attribution is like learning about irony from Alanis Morissette: It's bad advice that you just shouldn't take.
