The WHO needs an ambitious new leader who has a clear and prioritised vision: a WHO for the Global Good that focuses on its comparative advantage. A vision member states can get behind. Yet we are beginning to see the opposite. Candidates promising all things to all people. This way leads to ruin: no vision for the organisation, more member states losing interest in the WHO, and funding going elsewhere. In this new blog we lay out three tests for the new leader: 1) What is your vision for the WHO? 2) What should WHO stop doing? 3) Will you prioritise a WHO for the Global Good? https://lnkd.in/evGXYDPu 👉 With thanks to Ainhoa Petri-Hidalgo Might interest Cathrine M. We recently proposed an The IDA Health Window at the World Bank as the solution to global health financing reform. It would provide on-budget funds to governments to expand the provision of basic life saving health services. The idea is beginning to gain traction. Today we publish four commentaries: - Gerald Manthalu (Africa CDC) - Kalipso Chalkidou (World Health Organization) - John-Arne Røttingen (Wellcome Trust) - Agnes Soucat,(Agence Française de Développement). 👉 https://lnkd.in/e6dubNYY The authors are broadly supportive, and call for further development of the proposal, particularly on how it relates to funding of global public goods, the private sector, and regional development banks. Thanks very much to the authors.

What is foreign aid for? As governments face tighter budgets and growing political pressure, CGD experts argue that restoring support for aid starts with being clearer about its purpose—and more honest about its limits.

On 24–25 November, leaders from the African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU) will meet in Angola, for their first summit in three years. But what exactly should leaders ask for and propose? In a new blog series, CGD authors present ideas across a wide range of policy areas and set out concrete proposals for action. In this part of the series, CGD's Han Sheng Chia argues that as AI climbs the global policy agenda, policymakers should focus on practical ways to make it work for people in Africa now—via SMS and phone calls—before building expensive data centers: go.cgdev.org/4o8VVaK

On 24–25 November, leaders from the African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU) will meet in Angola, for their first summit in three years—presenting a key opportunity for leaders on both continents to advance a partnership that is truly mutual, reflecting the shared interests and complementary strengths of both blocs.
