A group of local organizations in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom (NEK) joined together to form a collaborative to improve health systems in the most rural region in the state. But when the NEK was hit with historic, back-to-back storms in July 2024, they had to put their long-term plans on hold to help their neighbors recover from catastrophic flooding. Led by Northern Counties Health Care, Inc., the organizations worked alongside local leaders, faith organizations, businesses, government agencies and the Vermont Department of Public Health to deploy volunteers and support flood recovery efforts. We're proud to support the Vermont collaborative, and local partnerships across the country, as they work to meet the health needs of their communities. With support from the CDC Foundation, the Cheyenne River Long Term Recovery Group has been working to help community members prepare for weather-related disasters by arranging emergency response trainings and sharing critical preparedness information through local events and their weekly radio show. These incredible efforts ensure the community is better protected from the associated health effects of extreme weather events. Read more about their efforts to keep their rural community connected and safe before, during and after emergencies.
