What if the most valuable ferry routes are the ones we haven’t been able to operate yet? That question is at the heart of our new white paper with Boreal: https://lnkd.in/dJcGNndM Boreal has ordered 20 Candela P-12s, with the first vessels scheduled for delivery in 2027. Their ambition goes beyond replacing existing ferries. Smaller, efficient vessels could make direct connections between homes, workplaces and transport hubs viable. In Drammen, a pilot showed how existing piers and temporary charging can let a city test a route before committing to permanent infrastructure. It also found particularly strong expected use among people who currently travel by car. For cities and public transport authorities, the question is which new connections the waterways could make possible.

Norway has more experience than any other country in electrifying maritime transport. Drawing on those lessons, leading operator Boreal has invested in a fleet of 20 Candela P-12 electric hydrofoiling ferries. Read our latest White paper outlining learnings from a decade of maritime electrification and how Candela P-12 provides a different solution: https://lnkd.in/dUbMU77J Boreal CEO Nikolai Utheim and Norwegian Transportøkonomisk institutt (Norwegian Centre for Transport Research) researcher Christin Krohn discuss how the Candela P-12 can create new connections between communities and cut travel times on existing routes - without the need for major infrastructure investments. Which routes haven’t been possible because the “right” vessel didn’t exist? That’s the question Boreal asked. https://lnkd.in/d2i9xd6f Traditional ferries are often too big, too energy-intensive and too expensive to run frequently. And when the service isn’t attractive, demand stays low. A fleet of smaller, nimbler electric hydrofoil vessels changes that equation: faster trips, more frequent departures and the ability to connect places that previously didn’t make sense by water. That thinking led Boreal to order not one Candela P-12, but 20. Read about it in our jointly-written white paper (in link above) and then ask yourself: Which water route in your city or region should exist – but doesn’t today? #PublicTransport #ElectricFerries #MaritimeInnovation #Hydrofoils

How do ferries go electric without losing range, speed or profit? Check out our new white paper (free download below). https://lnkd.in/eWk66srw Get unique insights on how Boreal and Candela are deploying the world’s largest fleet of ‘flying’ electric ferries. ✅ 80% lower energy usage ✅ 8x increase in frequency versus large conventional ferry ✅ minimal infrastructure investment required. Not ready for procurement? Boreal has ordered 20. Candela P-12 is already operating in daily public transport. Boreal, an experienced public transport operator, has ordered 20 vessels. Read the white paper: https://lnkd.in/dGGHUwF7 At some point, “not ready” stops being a technology assessment and becomes a reason not to decide. This is not just about replacing diesel ferries. Small, fast vessels enable frequent direct services; making public transport genuinely attractive. Low demand is often used to justify low frequency. But low frequency may be the reason for low demand. We do not need another pre-study concluding that more analysis is required. Choose one corridor. Define the outcomes. Put vessels in the water. Measure the results. Scale what works. Waiting may feel safe, but it risks locking another procurement cycle into large vessels, low frequency and low attractiveness. Boreal chose implementation over waiting.
