A teenager who learned filmmaking on YouTube just opened the #1 movie in America. No film school. A Blender setup, a YouTube channel, and an audience that followed him all the way to the box office after A24 expanded the ceiling of what a creator-led movie can be. That's one of the biggest entertainment stories this week, but it's not the only one. 🍿 Kane Parsons didn't just direct a film, and A24 didn't just distribute one. Together, they transformed an internet-native mythology into a theatrical event that delivered a worldwide opening box office of $118M, while Focus Features and Blumhouse’s Obsessions was up week-over-week in its third week while crossing the $100 million mark, on a production budget below $1M. 📺 Off Campus continues to show how quickly a passionate BookTok community can translate into mainstream television momentum, turning Ella Bright and Belmont Cameli into two of the fastest-rising young talents in entertainment. 📱 On Netflix, three Korean series remain in the global Top 10, reinforcing how global audiences continue to embrace storytelling regardless of language when platforms successfully connect content with the right audience. 🎧 Ariana Grande landed the highest new chart entry of the week, while Olivia Rodrigo continues to build momentum across streaming and social platforms. 🛒 Collaborations like F1 x Monopoly, Oreo x BTS, Coca-Cola x 007 First Light, and Disney x Elf on the Shelf highlight a trend I've been writing about for a while: the strongest partnerships today aren't built around awareness. They're built around fandom. In this week's newsletter, I break down the opening weekend drivers behind Backrooms, the biggest consumer product opportunities across the upcoming film slate, what's driving streaming globally, the latest talent momentum shifts, the brand partnerships that caught my attention this week, and more. #Media #BoxOffice #Streaming #Licensing #A24 #YouTube #Disney #Netflix #NBCUniversal

Let’s break down what’s actually happening across entertainment, media and licensing right now. ⌙ The Walt Disney Company's The Devil Wears Prada 2 keeps growing because it stopped feeling like a sequel and started feeling like a cultural event ⌙Warner Bros. Entertainment's Mortal Kombat II opened almost exactly where tracking had projected for months, showing how stable fandom-first openings have become ⌙ The Met Gala dominated the internet but produced surprisingly little downstream consumer behavior ⌙ Streaming continues being powered by recognizable franchises and globally scalable IP ⌙ Celebrity marketing is shifting from polished promotion into lifestyle integration, scarcity, and “process-as-content” ⌙ The strongest brand collaborations felt less like ads and more like participation layers inside culture Full breakdown below 👇 #Media #Entertainment #BoxOffice #Streaming #Marketing #Licensing #Disney #WarnerBros #Paramount

The Met Gala 2026 didn’t have a winner. It had a distribution vs conversion imbalance. If you only looked at feeds, this looked like a massive success: ⌙ Beyoncé dominated cross-platform visibility ⌙ Bad Bunny drove global velocity (US + LATAM + Europe) ⌙ K-pop amplification layers expanded reach into Asia within minutes TikTok clips → Instagram carousels → X commentary → YouTube breakdowns The system worked exactly as designed. But when you move one layer deeper (into behavior) the pattern breaks. Search didn’t follow the spectacle. It concentrated. ▪️ What actually moved Spikes clustered around names, not products. ⌙ <30% of top viral looks progressed from engagement → search ⌙ <10% show signals of intent (based on historical red carpet benchmarks + early patterns) Most content peaked at visual consumption, not action ▪️ Who actually won 1️⃣ Cultural Scale Beyoncé Bad Bunny They drove reach, velocity, and platform spread. But this layer is top-of-funnel only. 2️⃣ Behavioral Movement Sabrina Carpenter Rihanna These moments pushed users off-platform. That’s where value actually starts compounding. 3️⃣ Perception Control Balmain (congrats Bruna) Dior Saint Laurent They defined the aesthetic of the night. But there’s a disconnect: ⌙ High editorial dominance ⌙ Low measurable demand signal 4️⃣ Conversion Efficiency Chopard Cartier Tiffany & Co. (well done Hector, Nathalie, Andrea, and team) Fenty Beauty (Nanette congrats) These categories outperform for one reason: They sit closer to realistic ownership ⌙ Jewelry = identifiable + aspirational + searchable ⌙ Beauty = replicable + immediate In every red carpet dataset I’ve looked at, these categories have the highest intent efficiency per impression ▪️ EMV tells the same story if you look at it correctly Estimated distribution ⌙ 40–45% → Talent ⌙ 25–30% → Designers ⌙ 15–20% → Media ⌙ 10–15% → Brands + creators That’s not balanced. That’s a top-heavy attention model. Which explains why demand doesn’t cascade. ▪️ Platform behavior amplified the imbalance TikTok accelerated exposure Instagram locked in prestige X compressed reactions YouTube extended narrative ▪️ The structural issue The Met Gala is optimized for: ⌙ spectacle ⌙ originality ⌙ cultural signaling Demand is driven by: ⌙ recognition ⌙ repeatability ⌙ accessibility Those two systems are drifting further apart. 💡 Non-obvious takeaway The highest-performing looks of the night weren’t the most viral. They were the ones that reduced the distance between admiration and ownership That distance is where conversion lives. And most of the carpet is moving in the opposite direction. For brands, this is the real opportunity. ⌙ Not to win the night. ⌙ But to design the bridge between: being seen → being searched → being bought Most teams are still optimizing for the first step. That’s why moments like this look massive but behave small.

Let’s break down what’s actually happening across entertainment, media and licensing right now. The shift isn’t really about awareness anymore. Most campaigns are good at that. It’s about what happens after. ⌙ Streaming is driving consumption at scale ⌙ Theatrical is still doing more of the memory building ⌙ Partnerships are getting sharper but mostly within existing audiences ⌙ Fandom shows up early but it doesn’t always pull new people in A #1 opening doesn’t always mean a bigger audience. That’s the pattern that keeps showing up across film, streaming, and music. On paper, this week things looks strong. Big openings. Massive streaming hours. Global charts moving fast. But when you look a layer deeper, the outcomes start to separate. The 20th Century Studios Devil Wears Prada 2 opens strong, and the marketing halo immediately lifts Disney+ globally. You can see the catalog move almost in real time. Underneath that, the demand drivers for the The Walt Disney Company movie are very clear. Baseline and cast equity did most of the work, with PR and the fashion ecosystem expanding the film into a broader cultural moment. Paid media sustained urgency, while partnerships mostly reinforced existing behavior rather than creating new demand. Lionsgate's Michael goes further. It doesn’t stop at box office or streaming. It reactivates music consumption at a global level. That’s expansion. Then you have Apex. Huge hours on Netflix. Real scale but the cultural footprint feels lighter. Less carryover. Less stickiness. Same ecosystem, but three very different outcomes. So you end up with campaigns that are highly efficient. They hit projections. They convert intent. But they don’t always expand the audience. That’s where the ceiling shows up. And it matters more than it looks, especially if you’re thinking beyond opening weekend into streaming, licensing, and long-term franchise value. The takeaway I keep coming back to: the industry has gotten very good at capturing attention. It’s still figuring out how to expand it. Time to break down what’s actually driving performance across entertainment, media, and licensing. This week, the pattern is clearer than ever. The industry isn’t operating in cycles anymore. It’s operating in systems. 🍿 At the box office, a handful of titles are doing most of the work. Illumination Super Mario Galaxy Movie and MGM's Project Hail Mary aren’t breaking out in a single moment. They’re stabilizing the entire market through sustained demand. 📺 On streaming, engagement is concentrating. A return like A24 / HBO Euphoria can reactivate global conversation overnight, while titles like Netflix's Virgin River, One Piece, and Ludo Studio's Bluey continue to drive consistent, repeatable viewership. At the same time, content gaps are making every new release hit harder. 🎧 In music, the cycle is even tighter. A Coachella performance can push an artist back into the charts. A new release from Olivia Rodrigo can take the #1 spot within days. Attention is resetting in real time. 🎯 And marketing is shifting fast. The Walt Disney Company's The Devil Wears Prada 2 is already operating at scale before release through a network of global partnerships, generating $100M+ in marketing value. But here’s the tension: - Awareness is high. - Intent is flat. 🌐 Meanwhile, platforms are becoming the front line. Per Looper Insights Home screen placement is now one of the most valuable pieces of media inventory. Discovery isn’t happening through campaigns. It’s happening through interfaces. 💡 The shift is structural. It’s no longer about who creates the biggest moment. It’s about who can stay in motion across the system. Because awareness is no longer the constraint. Conversion is. 📌 Also worth checking this week: open roles across the industry. Some really strong opportunities, including Head of Marketing for Beast Games at MrBeast. Time to break down what’s driving performance across entertainment, media and licensing. 🍿 At the box office, Project Hail Mary didn’t win on scale. It won by changing how people understood the movie. Early perception leaned science-heavy. Late campaign reframed it as emotional, accessible, and human. That shift lowered the barrier. Add Ryan Gosling, and it converted. 🎬 As we move into the early summer corridor, one gap is becoming more important than anything else: Awareness vs conversion. Universal Pictures is already converting momentum for The Super Mario Galaxy through partnerships, retail, and global activations. 📺 Per Looper Insights, on streaming, the competition has shifted layers. It’s no longer only about what you have. It’s about where you show up. Peacock concentrated attention around cultural moments. HBO Max distributed it across its catalog. Both work. The advantage goes to whoever controls the screen first. 🌏 And once something works, streaming amplifies it. Netflix One Piece and War Machine are holding at scale. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure scaled globally in days. When theatrical hits streaming, like Zootopia 2, it doesn’t peak. It expands. The entire IP moves with it. 🎵 Music is running on the same system. Songs aren’t breaking at release. They’re breaking through circulation. - Dominic Fike through rediscovery. - Zara Larsson through cultural moments. - BTS through fanbase scale. Different triggers. Same outcome. Sustained presence. 📱 And then there’s social authority. Dua Lipa shows what that looks like now. Not reach. Behavior. That’s why her role with Nespresso matters. It places the product inside something people want to replicate. 💡 Partnerships are evolving in the same direction. The Devil Wears Prada 2 is building depth through lifestyle alignment. The Super Mario Galaxy is scaling through reach, frequency, and collectibles. Different strategies. Same objective. Turn attention into participation. Which brings it back to the headline. 🎥 Trailer views are becoming the easiest metric to celebrate and the hardest to interpret. What matters is what happens after people press play. For Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the signal is clear. The trailer is reinforcing the floor, not expanding the ceiling. Strong baseline demand. Sustained interest. No breakout surge yet. The bigger shift is this: We’re no longer in an awareness-driven industry. We’re in a momentum-driven one. Performance comes from how well you convert. And how long you can keep that momentum moving across platforms, formats, and behaviors. That’s where the real signal is now.
