Art can be an engine of community pride and economic growth, and Detroit Lakes provides a compelling example. With a Rural Leadership Boost Grant from Blandin Foundation, Project 412 has expanded public art and placemaking efforts that are reinvigorating downtown, elevating local artists, and creating new opportunities for connection and creativity. From large-scale murals to 12 weekly summer art events and utility-box art wraps, the initiative shows how rural communities can leverage creativity as a strategic asset. Affordable housing is out of reach for too many Itasca County families: two-thirds of homeowners and a third of renters spend more than 30% of their income on housing. For more than 30 years, Itasca County Habitat for Humanity has been building stability through homeownership. With help from a capacity-building grant from Blandin Foundation, Habitat added a new Family Support Manager, freeing up its executive director to focus on fund development. The result? In 2025, Habitat will nearly double its homebuilding pace and is exploring new financing, partnerships, and even net-zero builds to serve more families. Historic spaces carry stories, and when those spaces are preserved, the community benefits in more ways than one. In Calumet, Minnesota (pop. 334), local leaders uncovered serious issues in their 1930s city hall and library building, including a leaky roof and crumbling bricks, but they also found an opportunity to do more than patch over problems. With support from Blandin Foundation’s Small Communities Grant Program, Calumet is repairing the building, making it accessible (adding a lift), and creating new gathering spaces. They’re also preparing an empty bank building to become a coffee / sub shop, offices, and community space, and including a garden, a museum-like display of mining artifacts, and a space for residents to meet, learn, and socialize. Blandin Foundation is proud to announce 46 grants totaling $4.5 million to support locally led projects across rural Minnesota. From community gathering spaces and housing solutions to food systems, entrepreneurship, language revitalization, and civic participation, these investments reflect the ingenuity and leadership already present in rural communities. More than 60% of funded projects serve communities with fewer than 3,000 residents, and nearly half of all grant dollars support projects focused on communities least able to access resources in rural Minnesota. Together, these investments strengthen community wealth, create more welcoming places, and help rural communities build the future they envision. Congratulations to every grantee. We look forward to seeing what's possible when local leadership is matched with investment. Explore the full list of grant awards: https://bit.ly/46n4DvA

For decades, Blandin Foundation has championed broadband as essential infrastructure for rural communities. Today, the conversation is evolving. As a recent Daily Yonder story puts it, broadband has become the “price of admission” for rural economic development, not an economic development strategy on its own. That distinction matters. Reliable, high-quality broadband gives rural communities the foundation to grow businesses, deliver health care and education, attract and retain residents, and create new opportunities. But infrastructure alone doesn't make those things happen. Communities also need the leadership, skills, partnerships and vision to put connectivity to work. And as major federal investments move from planning toward construction, the decisions being made now matter for the long haul. The Farm Bill could shape the future of USDA's ReConnect program, while Minnesota's BEAD projects are expected to connect nearly 75,000 locations. The latest Blandin on Broadband looks at what's happening and what it means for rural communities. Read more: https://bit.ly/4g9QTZL
